On one occasion, November 19, 1966 specialist fourth class Westfall exhibited exceptional valor while engaged with hostile forces in Vietnam. When a company to his left made contact with a Viet Cong force Westfall’s platoon advanced to provide flanking fire. As Westfall’s platoon maneuvered forward they came under intense automatic and sniper fire and were pinned down. Westfall was wounded but continued to return fire until his ammo was spent. He then moved around the platoon under heavy fire to redistribute weapons and ammunition. Westfall then crawled outside of the perimeter to rescue wounded personnel on three occasions. On a fourth occasion he noticed a hostile casualty and dragged him back into the perimeter. When a relief force arrived Westfall carried several wounded men to a valuation area. Westfall refused treatment for his wounds until after his platoon had withdrawn to the landing zone.
