The Queen of Soul is an 87-track,[2] four-disc,[3] compilation album that contains selected recordings made by Aretha Franklin for Atlantic Records between 1967 and 1976.[4][5]
Background
editArranged in chronological order,[2] material is drawn from each of Franklin's Atlantic album's between 1967 and 1976, except for two that had not (prior to 2014) been released on CD. Those two are 1974's With Everything I Feel in Me and 1975's You.[5] Additional material is taken from singles[6] and studio outtakes.[7]
This release by Rhino Records should not be confused with the 1992 release by Atlantic Records entitled Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings. Both are 4-CD compilations. They share 75 tracks. The Atlantic release, however, contains 11 tracks not on the Rhino release, and the Rhino release has an additional 12 tracks not found on the Atlantic release.[8][9][10][11][12][13]
Original albums
editThe Queen of Soul draws songs from fourteen Atlantic albums, as well as numerous singles and outtakes.[13]

Critical reception
editIn his review for AllMusic, Mark Deming noted that the album's artwork is "nothing to write home about" and that the "skimpy liner notes contain only credits." He then went on to say, "But give this a spin and nearly all quibbles are forgotten: no matter what she's singing, Franklin sounds excellent on this material..."[1]
