Being a working professional writer, I don't want to put much of my time into unpaid contributions towards a primarily amateur-written and almost exclusively amateur-managed "Encyclopedia" that doesn't even allow original research - let alone foster it. The fact that my qualified edits can be undone by unqualified amateurs without a decent reason or even a hint of good sense is more frustration than it's worth. And in my short time trying to make a positive contribution here, I've learned that if you want to succeed as an editor on Wikipedia you need to be willing to put an awful lot of time and energy into it. Too often you must be willing to fight tooth-and-nail for your work, just to keep it on the site. And while I think that's a great way to go about things for idiots and good-for-nothing anonymous editors, it obviously doesn't make any sense for those of us who work hard to write qualified, factual and correct information, or for those of us who enjoy efficiency and want to make a positive contribution quickly and easily. Bottom line, I have no intention of fighting hard just to contribute a small amount of information to the internet's consolidated external-source information dumping-ground masquerading as an Encyclopedia. On the other hand, it's undeniable that such consolidated external-source information dumping-grounds such as Wikipedia virtually always contain a wealth of useful information, and it's a great starting point for research on an enormous amount of topics. AND, given that it shouldn't take more than a few minutes of my time each week, I figure I can at the very least contribute easy corrections that I notice while reading. I may even make a few more substantial contributions focused on the industry in which I work. Television, Gaming, and Computer Hardware & Software are of particular interest for me, and I may create some articles in those categories if I find I'm the first one to get there. And because I absolutely love Ice Cream, I naturally keep track of what its manufactures are doing with its ingredients, and have thus already contributed heavily to a couple of the Ice Cream manufacturer pages on here. I also love Football, and I'm pleased that Wikipedia has such a wealth of information on the sport. Granted, I think much of it could be improved, and there are quite a few areas that could use plenty of additional information, but with my background and knowledge of the game, I can definitely help to fill-in some of those gaps. While most of my background has been writing on the topic, I'm also a former amateur player (and I'd still love to play Safety as a pro). So when an article catches my eye and I have the time to improve it, I very well may. |
