California Conservationist, President and CEO of Point Blue Conservation Science, a Non-profit Organization, which is a multi -faceted collaboration venture between scientists, national resource managers and various environmental agencies, in efforts to diagnose changes between the environment and wildlife sanctuaries, that are in danger due to accelerating climate change issues. Ellie Cohen is known for her environmental advocacy, leadership and hands on work with regards to improving diverse bird-focused wildlife ecosystems. Born and raised in Baltimore Maryland, Ellie studied Botany and ecology, receiving her undergraduate degree from Duke University, later acquiring a Masters degree in public policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy school of Government, distinguishing herself by being honored for her policy analysis by being awarded the first annual Robert F. Kennedy Public service award [1]. Ellie Cohen has also been recognized by Stanford University’s executive program for Non-profit leaders, being given a fellowship to the Graduate school of business in 2001[2] .
Ellie Cohen's educational endeavors have solidified her interest in analyzing systemic government policies, that ultimately have helped her implement successful conservation programs,in regards to climate changes and how it is affecting different wildlife environments, acquiring data throughout California’s changing landscape. Ellie Cohen's Fundraising, management and policy expertise is valued within many environmental advocacy organizations, such as being a member of the management boards of the San Francisco Bay, past chair of the Central Valley Joint Ventures (USFWS) and the governing board of NOAA’S Pacific Coast Ocean Observing System [3]. “From 2002-2005, Ellie was honored to represent the U.S. shorebird plan on the U.S. committee of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI) of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service” [4]. Ellie Cohen is also a Co-Founder of the Bay Area Ecosystems Climate Change Consortium, helping support healthy Bay Area wildlife, wetlands and human communities (http://www.baeccc.org). Along with Ellie Cohen serving as chair of the California Landscape Conservation Cooperative, which also promotes collaboration and implementation of natural resource conservation of ecosystems across California [5], she is also a member of the National Wildlife Federations Climate-Smart Conservation team.
In March 2009, Ellie M. Cohen was recognized as a National Women's History Month honoree. The theme that year was “Women taking the lead to save our Planet”, for her contributions toward understanding the devastating effects of the rapidly accelerating climate change issues that are helping destroy California’s diverse wildlife ecosystems and bird habitats [6]. Ellie Cohen lives in California with her family and continues to promote environmental change by giving speeches and lectures at universities, helping educate our future generations[7] .
