Red Hot Peppers And Blue Beans is a children’s game which may be played nearly anywhere with minimal equipment. It’s origin is relatively unknown but was popular with children growing up in the 1950s. The game was still being played actively in the Chicagoland area up until the early ‘90s. It is a game of deception and strategy that combines the rules of Tag and Kick The Can. It consisted of an individual, “It”, hiding a belt in the area of play while the other players covered their eyes and counted to 30. The players would then search for the hidden belt. Upon finding the belt the player would then yell out “Red hot peppers and blue beans!” before swinging the belt in an effort to “paddle” another player. All other players would then run to the designated safe area. The first person to get hit with the belt would be the next “It”. If no one was hit then the person having found the belt would be “It” for that round. This game is also known as Hot Butter Blue Beans, Hot Beans And Butter, and a different version called Huckle Buckle Beanstalk.
