The first fixture between Wigan Athletic and Cardiff City in the 2022–23 EFL Championship season was played on 7 October 2022 at the DW Stadium in Wigan. Wigan won the match 1–3. The match was notable as there were claims that the two goals for the game were of different sizes with one goal being taller than the other by 5 cm (2 inches). The match went ahead without modifications to either goal, as it was estimated that it would take 2 hours to make the required changes. The Hawk-Eye goal-line technology had to be re-calibrated for the match. This was the first of two games in a week where there were issues with goal sizes in the EFL Championship; the other match being Hull City v Birmingham City.
