M. Stanley Butler (born November 10, 1978) is an American author [1], entrepreneur and subject matter expert on nonprofit management [2] and social enterprise. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Striving Toward Excellence in Public Service (STEPS), Inc. and has been dubbed The "Infopreneur" [3][4] due to his ability to advise on many subjects related to business, politics, and religion from an informed perspective.
Early life and education
Butler was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1978. He was raised in a Southeast suburb of Cleveland in Bedford Heights, Ohio. He graduated from Bedford High School, Bedford Heights, Ohio. He has a bachelor's degree in Organizational Management from Malone University and master’s degrees in Business Administration and Public Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management with concentrations in areas of governmental and nonprofit management and finance. He holds a Doctorate of Divinity/Theology and completed all but his dissertation toward his Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy & Administration from Walden University.
Career
His career has included work within the private, nonprofit, and public sectors, with his private sector work being in the areas of viaticals/life settlements and wholesale liquidation. From 1999 to 2012, he was the Chief Executive Officer of Esperiod International, Inc., a development consulting company that worked primarily with faith-based nonprofit organizations and small businesses. Through Esperiod, he worked with organizations in the United Kingdom, Sweden, South Africa and many cities throughout the United States. From 2012 to 2017, he worked under Maryland's Department of Human Services as the Chief Fiscal Officer of one of the organization's local departments of social services, where he administrated over all fiscal activities of the agency. Later, he served as the Assistant Director for Local Government Administration, wherein he managed a division inclusive of human resources, finance, information technology, procurement, building and facilities, and fleet. He was instrumental in advancing the organization in acquisition and use of technology for enhanced customer service, developed internal financial controls and reporting for improved management of agency resources, and chaired numerous committees; all while initiating a cost-reduction plan to offset statewide budget reductions.
Butler is known for his consulting work, writings, and skillful facilitation of discussions and workgroups purposed to address difficult topics and issues. He is called upon to provide community workshops specific to nonprofit administration and organizational development. Through the STEPS Institute for Management & Learning, he facilitates trainings and provides online content to aid in leadership development. To accommodate national mentoring and development of leaders nationwide, he created the Leadership Link. The online membership portal trains men and women throughout the United States and abroad daily. Working directly with visionaries, Butler has been instrumental in the startup and management of nonprofit organizations serving communities throughout the United Stated.
