Here are the steps to install NVDA (it's rather difficult, I apologize for that, and please let me know if it works or if there are errors):
1) Go to [1]
2) Pick "Download"
3) Pick "NVDA r425 Portable version [zip file]"
The following steps (written using Windows XP with Internet Explorer) may be slightly different on different operating systems and/or web browsers:
4) On the "File Download" pop-up window, pick: "Save".
5) On the "Save As" pop-up window, pick: "Save".
6) Wait for the download to complete.
7) On the "Download Completed" pop-up window, pick: "Open Folder".
8) Double click on "NVDA-r425-bin".
9) Double click on "NVDA-r425-bin" (again).
10) Double click on "NVDA".
The following steps may be different depending on which software you are using to extract ZIP files:
11) On the "Compressed (zipped) Folders Warning" pop-up window, change the proposed directory to "C:\NVDA\nvda-r425-bin" and pick the "Extract All" button.
12) Select the "Next" button.
13) Select the "Next" button (again).
14) Select the "Finish" button.
15) Double click on "NVDA-r425-bin".
16) Right click on "NVDA" and select "Create Shortcut".
17) Drag the shortcut icon to the desktop.
18) Right click on the shortcut icon and select "Rename".
19) Rename the shortcut icon to just NVDA.
20) Pick the shortcut icon to run NVDA.
21) Print out the instructions listed when you start NVDA.
22) As a test, restart the computer and then click on the shortcut NVDA icon again, to make sure it still works.
Congrats, it's installed !
A blind user can now run it by doing the following:
1) Hold the "Flying Windows" key down while pressing M to get to the desktop.
2) Type N to highlight the first item on the desktop starting with N. If NVDA isn't the first item starting with N, continue to hit N until NVDA is selected (the blind user will need to memorize how many times if no other screen reader is on at the time).
3) Once the NVDA shortcut icon is highlighted, hit enter to start it.
