The Authors

edit

It was written by a group of storytellers in the late 18th and early 19th century, but it is generally believed that the main fantasy was written by two rival story tellers Muhammad Husain Jah and Ahmad Husain Qamar from 1883 till 1893 in Lukhnow,India. This story had been passed down to them or so everyone thought, from storytellers going back hundred of years.

But in truth, the Tilism-e Hoshruba was a monstrously elaborate literary hoax perpetrated by a small, tightly-knit group of storytellers from an earlier generation. How long it had been in preparation is not known. A story of such magnitude must have been in the making for many years. We know at least two generations of storytellers who were involved in the enterprise. The names of several men who propagated it most actively in their time have come down to us.

The mastermind behind this scheme is thought to be another great storyteller Mir Ahmad Ali who was well acquainted with the local environment and together with his disciple story tellers Hakim Asghar Ali Khan and Amba Parasad Raza narrated this incredible storyline. This epic story is about eight thousand pages long.

It was first published by the Naval Kishore press and became the best seller between 1883 to 1930. Eight editions alone were published in Lukhnow, India. The first four volumes were written by Muhammad Husain Jah and last three by Ahmad Husain Qamar. They compiled the work of Mir Ahmad Ali and the rest of the storytellers into this single and epic encounter between good and evil.

The Main Storyline

edit

The main story begins as a continuation of the Dastan e Amir Hamza (Hamzanama). Dastan e Amir Hamza (Hamzanama). was getting bored due to repetitive nature of the storyline so a group of storytellers from Lukhnow, India decided to change the nature of the Dastan e Amir Hamza (Hamzanama). in such a manner that the actual storyline is not disrupted and another parallel storyline is created. This storyline is based on the local aptitude, magic fauna including both, black and white magic, sorcerers and sorceresses.
Mir Ahmad Ali who was the mastermind behind this incredible tale decided to start the tale with Amir Hamza's more eminent enemies Zamarrud Shah Bakhtari alias Laqa who is a self proclaimed God and is running away from Amir Hamza and he is chasing after him along with his army and allies. As Zamarrud Shah Bakhtari alias Laqa is losing this battle he called Afrasiyab who is the ruler of a magical country containing hundreds and thousands of powerful sorcerers and witches to help him. Afrasiyab obliged his request as he is also the follower of Zamarrad Shah Bakhtari alias Laqa and decided to help him. The kingdom which Afrasiyab rules is known as tilism e hoshruba so as the name of this epic storyline. Tilism which literally means magic comprises of a whole magical country and much small tilisms are kept within. The core tilism however, the name of which is tilism e hoshruba was governed by Afrasiyab and the Empress Heyrat.

Tilism e hoshruba consisted mainly of three regions which were also smaller tilism’s, Tilism e Zahir the apparent which is for the commoners, Talism e Batin the hidden which is for the ministers and important persons and Tilism e Zulmat the dark where only a few can get access. This region contains the seven deadliest monsters which can’t be defeated and two powerful sorceresses which created the secrets and laws of the tilism e hoshruba.

Tilism e Zahir and Batin are separated by a river of flowing blood and can only be passed by the permission of Afrasiyab. The river has a bridge made of smoke and two smoke lions are guarding it.

Zamarrud Shah Bakhtari alias Laqa asked for help from Afrasiyab who was a firm believer of him, but Mir Ahmed Ali parked the fleeing giant Laqa in a land neighboring Hoshruba. Amir Hamza and his army followed and landed nearby. But the story is not about Laqa or Amir Hamza. The main action is set in Hoshruba. One of Amir Hamza’s sons was sent out hunting. He trespassed the boundaries of Hoshruba and killed one of the guardian sorcerers running on all fours in the shape of a fawn. The Emperor of Sorcerers decided to teach the prince a lesson. He captured the prince and imprisoned him. Amir Hamza sent for his diviners to figure out what to do next. They declared that the fate of Hoshruba was tied to Amir Hamza’s grandson, Prince Asad, who would conquer the tilism with the help of five tricksters. With that, the scene was all set for action. So a campaign is launched to conquer Hoshruba. These five tricksters were lead by Amir Hamza's close friend and master tricksters Amar Ayyar. He is mighty clever and a master of disguise, who can turn himself into any personality within minutes. He is also gifted by the prophets of some special gifts including which is the famous Sulemani cloak by wearing which he becomes invisible. The same hoax was used by [Rowling] in her famous Harry Potter fantasy series. Also he contains Zanbele, a gift in the form of a pouch which is invisible to everybody else and only he can take out or put anything inside this Zanbele, in it he can put anything and everything no matter how much the size of the material is and once it’s within his Zanbele the material won’t have any weight at all. So he can carry anything wherever he wants with ease.

Prince Asad invaded the tilism e hoshruba along with an army of forty thousand soldiers but all of them magically disappeared during their overnight stay, and he was left alone. Then he found the daughter of the Emperor Afrasiyab, princess Mah e Jabeen and they both fell into love with each other. Mean while Amar Ayyar along with his tricksters also invaded the Tilism e Hoshruba through another route and during his invasion he faced many challenges in the form of powerful sorcerers but due to his ingenuity and by the help of the gifts of prophets he defeated them all.
The invasion was helped by Mah Rukh, who is another powerful sorcerer and aunt of princess Mah e Jabeen. She brought an army along with herself and a war takes place between Afrasiyab and his allies and Prince Asad and his allies. Prince Asad finally comes out victorious and conquers the tilism e hoshruba.
