Lord Henry Sackett of the Somerset House was born in Orsett, Essex England in 1851. He removed to Texas to become a Texas Ranger, and was a founding member of Coleman County. As one of Captain Maltby's Minutemen, the Rangers built a post by the Colorado River, and it was Henry's rifle that put an end to Bigfoot, and Jape the Comanches. In 1870, after the battle of West Texas, Henry purchased the land in the vicinity of the old army post, Camp Colorado. He married the Captain's daughter, Mary MacNamara (aunt of Robert MacNamara Secretary of Defense during Vietnam.) He opened the first merchant store for all of Coleman and surrounding counties. Also, served as the first postmaster under seven presidents. He served four terms in the Texas State House of Representatives. Henry struck gold when he leased out a trac of land to an oil company, and paid $57,000 in taxes in 1924! Lord Henry Sackett's brother was the King of England, and his family were the Russian Tsar's, and German Emperor's. Mr. Sackett's granddaughter was Miss Coleman County, along with his 2nd great granddaughter, whom also made history at her school by becoming the first Homecoming Queen as a Freshman. His granddaughter was the first female paramedic in West Texas in 1984. She, also won a trip to Europe for her story that was published. Not only is she a Sackett, but she's also Davy Crockett's 6th generational niece. Henry Sackett was a true warrior with a heart of gold, and was loved, and cherished by so many.
