Malegarh Crematorium of Sepoy Mutiny Soldiers, Assam.
Malegarh is located in Baropunji, Karimganj district, address of the historical landmark is Latu. Malagarh was earlier under the Sylhet District of Bangladesh. The revolt of 1857 forms one of the most important chapters in the history of the Indian people for liberation from British rule. The revolt of 1857 is also known as the Sepoy Mutiny and the first war of Independence. In this war, the role of Assam was very significant. To work against the Britishers, the Maniram Dewan and Peyoli Phukan were hanging out and others like Kandepeswar Singha, the king of Charing, Bahadur Gaonburha, Formud Ali, Luki Hansuwa Boruah, Jeuram Dulia Boruah, they people gave a tremendous contribution to Assam. One thing is that, in Indian history or the Assam history, the historian distinctly elaborates about Assam, but sorrowfully said that the historian could not include about Malegarh, Latu. In Assam, the land of Malegarh, the sepoy mutiny happened on 18th Dec 1857 in the early morning. That morning Malegarh was warm-up with the sound of bombs and bullets. Along with the sounds of thousands of injured sepoys, the sky of Assam was trembling. The Britishers recognized this war as the 'Latu War', but rarely search about this war, there is very little about this historical place. Previously there was a big market in Latu, the British landlords, preserve their weapons money and other properties in Latu, Malegarh. The tourism department of Assam made number of 26 concrete mausoleums which is not well in present. Important thing is that the list of the sepoys, who contributed to Assam's Mutiny still has not been rescued. Lack of government interest, many lands of Malegarh gone in the hands of people. In 2011, for the first time, one NGO named Patkai Trackers organized independence day, hosting our National Flag. The government of India should recognize this place as a Historical Place.
