Eckler grew up in Simsbury, CT, where he was inspired by his grandfather who worked as a Tax Assessor for Orange County for 20 years, and later as a Land Agent for Portland Natural Gas.[1] He at an early age played chess and traded baseball cards to classmates for snacks and other seemingly less valuable collectables.[2] Eckler enjoyed the game of baseball but recognized the cards were mass-produced or a commodity with high supply.
Eckler started trading NYMEX crude oil options at the advent of electronic trading in 2006 while pursuing his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Southern California.
Investor
editIn early 2007, Eckler founded Tollgate Capital LP, a hedge fund based in Century City California. After making a windfall gain shorting the spread between West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude futures contracts in 2010 a group of medical professionals across New England funded Derived Advantage a commodity group specializing in algorithmic trading with a $40.5 million investment that Eckler currently manages.[3]
Recognition
editEckler has been a keynote guest speaker and panelist at several investment conferences in Las Vegas, Nevada and across Europe describing his views on commodities and interest rates. [4][5]
