Intro

Marc Jacobs is a well-known American fashion designer and owner of his own fashion label which is named after himself. Jacobs is most known for his grunge lines and collaborations with other high designers such as Louis Vuitton.

Childhood and Education

Marc Jacobs was born in New York City, New York on April 9, 1963 (age 58) to James and Judy Jacobs. Jacobs father was a scouting agent for the William Morris Agency, Jacobs's mother also worked for the William Morris Agency, and unfortunately passed away ulcerative colitis when Jacobs was seven years old. Jacobs also suffers from ulcerative colitis like his father. Jacobs's mother, Judy, did not take the death well and began to date a lot, remarry, and move around New Jersey, Long Island, and the Bronx. Jacobs's mother also suffered from mental illness which caused Jacobs to move in with his grandmother, Helen, during his teenage years located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Jacobs siblings, Julie and Paul, went into foster care which completely tore the family apart. Jacobs grew extremely close to his grandmother, much of his work is inspired by his grandmother's fashion taste and styles. His grandmother was his number one support with his education, designing, and basically his entire being. Jacobs attended High School Art and Design and furthered his studies at Parsons School of Design. Jacobs was also working after class at Charivari which was a upscale boutique and was the first place that Jacobs started to make his designs into real garments. Jacobs graduated in 1984 and won two highest awards given at Parsons, Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award and Design Student of the Year. After college, Jacobs designed his first collection for Reuben Thomas. Jacobs later won the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent and was the youngest designer to receive the award.

Career

Jacobs first job was as a stocker in the Charivari boutique at fifteen years old. Which is where Jacobs first garments were created and sold. Jacobs created his first collection for Reuben Thomas for the Label Sketchbook, Jacobs work was later featured in two major films at the time, Amadeus and Purple Rain. Which helped Jacobs win the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent in 1987. The most famous fashion line that Jacobs created was his grunge collection which ultimately got him fired from Perry Ellis during 1993 but opened doors for Jacobs in the long run. Shortly after being fired Jacobs started working with Louis Vuitton and created a new line called ready-to-wear which was marked as the most innovative. Jacobs shows for the ready-to-wear line lasted two hours long during Spring 2008, the shows were unpredictable. Another famous show of Jacobs was the Paper Castle (2012), the entire show was covered in construction paper or made out of construction paper and the models wore huge mink hats, bedazzled elf shoes, and bright colors. Jacobs has worked with many famous models such as Kendell Jenner, Aaron Whitty, Lindsay Lurgin, Mackenzie Cockerill, etc.
