- George Bass (1797-1799) - British naval surgeon navigator
- Matthew Flinders (1802-1803) - circumnavigated Australia and encouraged the use of that name for the continent
- John Oxley (1817-1818) - discovered Tweed River
- Allan Cunningham (1817-1821) - traveled in New South Wales to collect plants
- Hume and Hovell expedition (1824) - led expedition for new southern grazing land and also to find where New South Wales's western rivers flowed
- Charles Sturt (1828-1830) - attempted to discover inland sea
- Thomas Mitchell (1831-1846) - Prussian who explored northern and central Australia
- Ludwig Leichhardt (1842-1848) - explored north and central Australia
- Edmund Kennedy (1847-1848) - explored Queensland and New South Wales but killed at age 30 by Aborigines
- Burke and Wills expedition (1860-1861) - led an expedition of 19 men that disastrously failed
