Sonic X, the first Sonic-based anime series, was produced by Sega's animation subsidiary TMS Entertainment, with Naka serving as an executive producer. It originally ran for two seasons comprising 52 episodes, broadcasting on TV Tokyo from April 6, 2003 to March 28, 2004. An additional 26-episode season aired in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East from 2005 to 2006. The show's American localization and broadcasting were handled by 4Kids Entertainment, which edited it and created new music. The show was created for a Japanese audience and was influenced by other anime work rather than work from the West.

Unlike previous Sonic animated adaptations, Sonic X tells a single story that spans the series' run. Sonic X begins when the Sonic cast accidentally teleports from their dimension to Earth after a botched attempt to save Cream the Rabbit from Eggman. On Earth, Sonic befriends a human boy, Chris Thorndyke, who helps him find his friends. Throughout the course of the series, the Sonic cast repeatedly fights Eggman and his robots for control of the Chaos Emeralds while dealing with becoming celebrities on Earth. The second season adapts the events of the games Sonic Adventure (1998), Sonic Adventure 2 (2001), and Sonic Battle (2003). The third season sees the Sonic cast and Chris return to Sonic's dimension, where they enter outer space and fight an alien army.
