Yoshi is a character who appears in Nintendo's Mario video game franchise. Yoshi was created by Shigefumi Hino and first appeared in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) game Super Mario World (1990). Since his debut, Yoshi has appeared in most Super Mario titles and a series of self-titled games. He also appears in Mario spin-offs, such as Mario Kart and Mario Party, and in the crossover fighting game series Super Smash Bros.
Within the Mario franchise's fictional universe, Yoshi is a member of a species of dinosaur that resides on a tropical island known as Yoshi's Island. He acts as Mario's sidekick in the Super Mario series and is the main protagonist of its Yoshi spin-off series.
The idea for Yoshi originated from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto shortly after the completion of Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Miyamoto, based on his love of horse riding, wanted Mario to have an animal companion he could ride. Nintendo first attempted to implement the concept in Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988) but was unable to work around the technological restrictions of the Nintendo Entertainment System. When Super Mario World's development began, director Takashi Tezuka asked Hino to design a horse-like companion for Mario.
Yoshi is one of the most popular and recognizable Mario characters.
