Manshiyya quarter of Jaffa
edit- [1], Manshiyya quater was first founded by Egyptian soldiers who acompanied Ibrahim Pasha in his conquest of Palestine in 1831 (p. 282). Hassan Bek Mosque was built at a distance from the built-up area of the Manshiyya quarter some 60 years after it was founded ,"to keep the land north-west of the old city open for the northward spread of Jaffa and block the seemingly inexorable advance of Jewish land purchases and settlement surrounding Jaffa." (p. 283)
- [2] Located on the seafront to the north of the city's harbour. Destroyed in the 1948 war. The Hassan Bek mosque remains, "a strong symbol of its former Palestinian origins ... "
- [3] Manshiyya was located just outside the old city walls on the northern outskirts of Jaffa.
- [4] Information on an offensive by the Irgun on April 25, 1948, the resistance by the residents, the intervention of British troops, etc, etc.
