The controversy continues (imo) largely because dendros and other paleoclimatologists continue to recycle the same problematic tree-ring proxies that gave MBH 98/99 its characteristic HS shape. This aspect is under-reported in our article, starting with the early MM criticisms. McI has written on many occasions that the exact nmathematics used to generate a Mann-like HS is uncritical: so long as a stripbark bristleccone or similar proxy is included. McI sometimes refers to this as the "Mannomatic" process, and indeed, per McI, Mann & coauthors have never published a paleclimate reconstruction that hasn't included problematic proxies. This assertion is disputed by Mann & others.
