Tim Starling has been ill for the last nine days and went into surgery today. He was originally misdiagnosed as having gastroenteritis but it turned out to be a bowel obstruction caused by bands of adhesion that resulted from an appendicectomy nine years ago. The surgery took about almost three hours since he had to have 10cm of his small intestine removed, but he's now on a main ward and recovering well.
He's likely to be in the hospital (St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne) for another week and then taking up to six weeks before he's 100% again.

Update 11:51, 20 September 2006 (UTC): Tim is looking much better today. He's allowed to drink clear fluids and the physio even had him walking once around the ward this morning. Update 12:38, 21 September 2006 (UTC): Tim is still only on clear fluids, but a lot of the wires and tubes are gone (just one drip left) and he's well enough to be teaching himself python (since Civilization IV doesn't work on my laptop). Thank you all for your kind wishes. I just got home -- the nurses recommended that I discharge myself after most of my doctors decided to take Saturday morning off. I was off the IV and eating normal food, so there wasn't much point in staying in hospital. Thanks to those of you who pointed out the lack of illustration in the bowel obstruction article, I am making arrangements to obtain a copy of my series of fluoroscopic x-rays. I haven't seen them yet, but I believe they show the problem quite well.
I'll be trying to get back to work today, within reason of course. Don't worry yourselves about me stressing myself out, this is what I enjoy. It's a good activity for when I'm stuck in the house, not able to do anything strenuous. -- Tim Starling 04:15, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
