Energy is the transfer of the potential energy from one body that is capable of being expressed in another body as kinetic energy (or capacity to work that takes time. That energy may be in the intimate form of mechanical motion or heat transfer or the transfer over distance through a medium capable of supporting convection or radiation. dark matter may facilitate Quantum entanglement where the experience of one particle affects the behavior of another at some distance
It is arguable that time is related to energy transformation or information flow. There are apparently three fundamental laws on nature that appear to be (paradoxically) both immutable and incompatible:
- The constant “C” popularly known as the speed of light - a sort of natural speed limit that can not be exceeded but which requires a pair of markers and some sort of medium between them to define distance
- The law of entropy states that material things become increasingly disordered evolve over time but that eventually the process reverses and nature tries to equalize everything as fast as possible. This is because matter is mostly “solidified energy” (in stars planets and dark matter but eventually matter is “liquefied “ back to its component elements and ultimately perhaps mostly energy in black holes
- Some sort of transmission medium allowing these two criteria to link and live together harmoniously. But what? Time? energy? or information? Or are these three like energy and material, simply different, aspects of the same unifying thing? The elusive Theory of everything
It is not possible to have waves without material moving up and down, rather than along - although the wavefront seems to move along, the material carrier simply vibrates up and down. Electrical waves and magnetic waves are united by a sort of gyratory movement so that they appear to be a sort of “two in one” exemplified by Fleming's left-hand rule for motors (receivers of electrical energy) and Fleming's right-hand rule for generators (senders of electrical energy). Does something similar apply to Electrostatic deflection? Magnetism? Gravity? Is centrifugal force part of gravity? Maybe all fundamental interactions have counter forces embedded in some sort of normal distributionbut balanced or mediated by
The question then is what sort of material transfers solar energy over a distance of about 150 million Km (c. 500 light‑seconds) to Earth?
- The ancient answer was Æther a sort of mythical membrane that enclosed the classical elements (fluid water, solid earth, nebulous air and flaming heat).
- The modern concept is dark matter that allows electrical and magnetic influences plus gravitational and centrifugal forces to operate over distance, the snag with that is that distance can not exist without defining a material start point and end‑point (destination) as well as some sort of material conductor between.
In the original Einstein thought experiment his source was a (static) railway station, the destination was a (moving) locomotive while the conductor was a (connecting) pair of iron rails. The pendulum station‑clock, being static only swung back and forth over a short straight line but the moving‑clock had to describe a longer triangular wave of its swinging motion “stretched” by the speed of the train, so that increased velocity “accelerates” the perception of time time.
Thus time is a variable, depending on increased or decreased distance and limited by the natural “speed limit” the constant “C”
For example, a hot drink in a cold room will equalize to room‑temperature over perhaps an hour or so. Conversely a broken cup made of clay from the earth will probably end‑up in landfill and could take many millions of years to reach the equilibrium (return to its original components) as required by entropy. This is convenient for archaeologists who can measure time by an decay analogue that is radiocarbon dating. Of course this is only true on earth where everything is held at near constant velocity of the daily rotation of the earth and its orbital velocity!
To what do we mean by true time? We first had Greenwich Mean Time , then defined by simple pendulums, then International Atomic Time and Coordinated Universal Time defined by statistical model sof entropy which is fine as long as we stay on earth, but what about space travel, when time is velocity dependent? Astrophysicist Brian Koberlein noted the since rate of time is affected by gravity, then the stronger the gravitational acceleration, the slower an atomic clock would run. If that is so the mass of, and the gravity upon Mars should be only about one third that of Earth an atomic clock on Mars would tick faster by about 477 microseconds a day. He foresaw a problem with tidy theoretical models and actual (if inconvenient) reality.
At the other end of the size scale, microbiologist Rupert Sheldrake proposes a mechanism called morphic resonance to explain the dichotomy between the diversity of evolution (someone creating a cup from clay and someone else breaking it) versus the equality of entropy and the broken cup returning to its component minerals) ,
The point about resonance is that vibrations take time and how much time depends on distance that communication happens defined by the mass and velocity of the environment in which the vibration occurs.
An alternative view Lee Smolin reasons that physicists have improperly rejected the reality of time because they confuse mathematical models with reality and perhaps very laws of physics are not fixed, but evolve over time.
The Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli and French mathematician Alain Connes that propose this does not mean we must abandon our usual concept of “earth-time” but we should recognise that is one of many possible different times that coexist in different situations is perhaps a better way to understand how time actually works is by thinking about heat
Physicist and gravitational wave Gideon Koekoek asks Why does light exist? and answers his question with the presumption that it mediates between the constant speed and the need for symmetry. When something changes in one location, that information must reach distant locations to maintain symmetry, but cannot travel instantaneously. This solution, he avers lies in photons carrying information to harmonise disorder an explanation that seeks to connects separate branches of physics into a seemingly coherent whole.
If we take the simplest material Protium (1H) we have a complex assembly of gravitational force keeping the electron and proton nucleus both together, plus an electromagnetic force providing the impetus powerfully driving the electron to maintain its orbit by centrifugal force, yet equally that electromagnetic force is generated by the motion of the electron, which is to say, protium is almost (but not quite) - pure energy that is also asymetric, and therefore apt to wobble unless something forces it to pair with another, to become deuterium. That force can overcook the recipe to create th highly radioactive tritium, perhaps the catalyst to the production of helium, in the core of a hydrogen cloud as it forms a star?
Stars are naturally highly unstable, they become more massive by “eating” whatever matter they can attract. Eventually, as stars spit debris that become asteroids, and planets form in orbit around stars they seem to achieve as sort of stability “plateau” much as a person grows rapidly for a decade or two, then reaches a fairly stable adulthood for perhaps five or six decades before – well stardust unto stardust? (for are we, our star and all its planets other than merely stardust heading to the ignominy of a black hole only to emerge as freshly minted as protium in another time Tn?
