Sugar cane is one of the oldest cultivated crops, originating from Asia. It was unknown in Europe until the Middle Ages and, once discovered/traded, became a luxury item that was only available to the upper class. It was only when beet sugar was discovered in the 18th century, that sugar became an affordable product and became an important part of our daily diet.

Due to the widespread and excessive usage of sugar, it became evident that it has a huge impact on health and brings along meny risks like diabetes, as well as stimulates the problem of obesity. Science sought a solution to this problem and found it in the form of sweeteners.

In 1965, American research chemists discovered the sweetener Aspartame. It is made up of two naturally occurring amino acids and tastes remarkably similar to sugar. It is nowadays used in many sweeteners like Canderel, Assurgin, ... Produced in Switzerland by MCM Klosterfrau Vertriebsgesellschaft, Assugrin is the main table sweetener in West Germany.

In 1967, German researchers discovered Acesulfame-K, a calorie-free organic compound, which is added mainly to other sweeteners in order to enhance the flavor. Blends of Aspartame and Acesulfame-K are often rated as the best sweetener.
