Origins

edit

The Downhill Only Ski Club was formed in 1924 in the small Swiss village of Wengen when some of the Club founders asked the local railway service, the Wengeneralpbahn, to run trains up the mountain during the winter. The Wengeneralpbahn normally ran as a service to local Alpine farmers during the summer but service was stopped when the snows came. This required skiers who wished to ski down the mountain pastures should walk up the mountain to their start point. The idea that the train would transport them up the mountain to let them ski down led to the name - Downhill Only.

Present Status

edit

The present club is a company limited by guarantee with permission to drop the word Limited from its name, thus, Downhill Only. The title of this page includes Ski Club to clarify the purpose of the organisation.

Its website can be found here.
