Jihae is a Korean-American singer, composer, and multimedia artist based in New York City.
Early life
editJihae (born Jihae Kim in Seoul, South Korea) traversed the world in her youth from Korea, Nigeria, Sweden to London and ultimately to New York City.
Music career
editIn 2007 she released her debut LP My Heart Is An Elephant, which received critical acclaim. Trace Magazine declared Jihae, “A creative genius.” [1]
In 2008 she released her 2nd LP, Elvis Is Still Alive, which Dave Allen (Gang of Four) blogged, “A delicate masterpiece.”
Jihae’s reputation for her spellbinding performances have reached far and wide from the Cannes Film Festival for her musical score of a short film collective,“One Dream Rush,” to a Hennessy commercial in Morocco and an opening act for Lou Reed, Sonic Youth at the Anthology Film Archives 40th Anniversary benefit.
Fire Burning Rain, her latest CD which features nine songs that create a seamless soundscape with layered musical arrangements. Jihae once again brings a musical sophistication to her ever-evolving sound on her third record.
Multimedia Artist
editAlso a multimedia artist, Jihae’s expanding work in music, fine art and films and theater has got- ten her critical acclaim with works featured on IFC, NME, MTV, Pitchfork, ID,Vogue Germany, NY Press, etc. She has collaborated with numerous creatives and filmmakers including Michel Gondry, Christopher Doyle, Peter Beard, Marco Brambilla and John Patrick Shanley.
Fire Burning Rain
editFire Burning Rain is a multi-media rock opera created by Jihae in collaboration with two time Academy Award winning playwright and director John Patrick Shanley. The music is based on Jihae's album of the same title. Inspired by Joan of Arc, it is a futuristic tale of a heroine’s journey to free ‘the light’ to save the dying earth and humanity. JIhae and a cast of 20 dancers, actors and acrobats performed Fire Burning Rain at the Highline Ballroom on September 8, 2011.
Ghost
edit"Ghost" is a 2010 video art piece by Marco Brambilla. In it, Jihae uses her voice like a percussive instrument, breathing Maurice Ravel’s classical piece Bolero.
Interview
editInterview is a video art piece by Gerald Byrnes, shot by Christopher Doyle. Jihae sings and acts in the piece, which was launched at the Venice Bienniale in 2008.
Koh Sang Woo
editJihae collaborates with Korean Painter/Photographer, Koh Sang Woo on a performance art presentation at the Asian Arts Award Ceremony.
Elvis Is Still Alive

Simon Says Sing For Peace
editSimon Says is an interactive musical peace movement created by Jihae. Using the most universal children's game as a tool for peace, Jihae wrote a children's peace song called Simon Says to give a voice to the children that don't have a voice. To create awareness of child soldiers and affected children in areas of conflict all over the world and promoting change using the power of song, Jihae made an instrumental version of Simon Says encouraging everyone to write and record their own peace message or dance or just a sing along.[3]
TenThousandMeans
editTenThousandMeans was established in 2009 to bring about awareness of this issue through varied artistic involvement and locality support.TenThousandMeans has partnered with human rights organizations worldwide with proven commitments toward and gains in this arduous fight. JIhae participates in a video piece to support TTM in their fight for human trafficking.
