Redneck culture is a modern offshoot of Bohemianism. It is highly associated with the Southern United States, but significant in other regions of the world. The term redneck, which is otherwise disparaging, is taken in by adherents as a source of pride, rather than of regret.

Characteristics

Like traditional Bohemianism, redneck culture centers on meager and nonconformist living, but rednecks differ in view of aesthetics. While mainstream aesthetics focus on things like nature and people, Bohemianism challenges this artistic perception by finding beauty in the more mundane; contrastly, redneck taste of aesthesis goes one step further and sees beauty in things which are commonly considered eyesores. Such as that which is old, or worn out.

Which may include: barefooting, racing, bonfires, hunting, fishing, unorthodox sports, moderate naturism, recreational drug use, and compulsive hoarding.

Public perception

Redneck culture in general is often times view frivolously or negatively by mainstream American culture. Many Rednecks are known for their self-deprecating humor, but redneck culture should be distinguished from its popular sterotype.

Relativism

Frequent use of the Confederate flag by redneck adherents have arouse much controversy due to opposing views of its symbolism. Extremes in how certain symbols are interpreted is not completely unheard of. A notable case occured between ethnic Russians and Estonians in Tallinn around the use of Soviet imagery. To certain extremes there have been attempts by local governments and institution to further distance from a "redneck" image. Popular surges in the adoption of inoperable vehicle ordinances may be seen as an ethnocentric trend towards cultural assimilation. Also as many rednecks may engage in atleast some extent of naturism such policies as the infamous "No shirt, no shoes, no service." May also be construed to have similar connotations.
