Opera “Kundry”
As a part of the International Arts Festival “Regarding…” in 2021 Maria Nasimov produced the original opera “Kundry” that premiered at the Israeli Opera House in Tel Aviv on 21-23 of October 2021. Though named after the wild woman who appears in composer Richard Wagner’s final music drama “Parsifal”, “Kundry” was not based on music composed by Wagner, who was known as a bigot, an antisemite, and a misogynist. The plot of “Kundry” moves within the personal life of a contemporary opera singer and Wagner’s Parsifal character, a role that has itself been interpreted by divas throughout operatic history as the most complex, contradictory, and fascinating female character. Maria's decision was to distance her production from Wagner's music while exploring the depth of his characters, showcases her innovative approach and commitment to addressing historical biases in opera.
Composed by Avner Dorman Libretto by Yael Ronen Conductor: Steven Sloane Director: Lotte de Beer with Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and Jessica Muirhead as Jessica / Kundry Duration: approx.70 minutes
