Details

edit

The project aims to link various stakeholders (Directorate General of Foreign Trade(DGFT), customs, ports, airports, and banks). Under this project, government departments at the EDI-enabled trade locations, will communicate with one other, and reduce the problem of clearances faced by private players as traders would not need to go to the Customs Departments[2].

The project implementation includes an electronic system known as EDI whereby the DGFT and Customs can exchange electronic messages. The project would cover all services and work to reduce transaction time with online approvals, less delay, faster goods movement, and simplified procedures. Initially it will target a few states before being rolled throughout the country [3].

The implementation of EDI is among several steps taken by the Indian government to reduce transaction costs, with the total saving from all these steps estimated at Rs 2100 crore annually[4].

Status

edit

EDI has been rolled out in 92 locations, as of February 2011 [5]. To enable quick cargo clearance, self-assessment of duties and filing of declarations has been introduced EDI system, which is expected to benefit the traders [6].
