Early Life

edit

Pedro Veiga Jr. was born on June 24, 1988 in Boston, Massachusetts. Soon after his birth, Veiga's family relocated to the Cape Verde Islands—an archipelago located off the coast of Senegal, West Africa. Having spent the majority of his childhood in São Filipe, he often describes his years on Fogo as his "hometown". As a child, Veiga loved to sing São Vicente Morna, widely considered the country’s national genre of music.[3] At age 14, he moved back to Boston to [4]

2018–present: FCMG and Career Beginnings

edit

Prior to the launch of his debut promotional single "Hell to Heart", June started his own independent record label, called Flight Club Music Group, in early 2018 with his business partner, Shanell Petrino.[5] June sought for an avenue to release his own music, which caught the attention of illustrious music entrepreneur, Akon Thiam.[1]

On May 3, 2019, June was featured in Angolan DJ DJEFF’s single, titled "Ocean".[6]

Musical style and influences

edit

As a singer-songwriter raised on the sounds of morna, kizomba, and zouk,[3] Freedom's music draws from his childhood experiences in Cape Verde. and supplements them with a modern R&B and electronics while lyrics explore the subjects of religion and unrequited love.[8] Eclectic yet delicately delivered pop-RnB with an indie egde.[9]

Freedom cites Cesária Évora and Ildo Lobo as musical influences and sources of acoustic inspiration.[10]
