Tropical Storm Maria is a Cape-Verde type tropical cyclone currently threatening the Lesser Antilles recently damaged by Hurricane Irma.[1] It is the thirteenth named storm of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. Maria's wake prompted Antigua and Barbuda's third hurricane watch in a span of two weeks.[2]

editEarly on September 16, the NHC began monitoring a potential tropical cyclone. The storm intensified into Tropical Storm Maria later on that day.

editAs of 5:00 a.m. AST (09:00 UTC) September 17, Tropical Storm Maria was located within 40 nautical miles of 13°00′N 54°54′W / 13.0°N 54.9°W, about 460 miles (740 km) east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles. Maximum sustained winds are 55 knots (65 mph; 85 km/h), with gusts to 55 knots (80 mph; 120 km/h). The minimum barometric pressure is 992 millibars (hPa; 29.59 inHg). The system is moving west at 13 knots (15 mph; 24 km/h). Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center of Maria.
