Kadesh African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is a historic church in Edenton, North Carolina. The church began in 1857, and the current building seating 400 on Gale Street was built around 1900 by Hannibal Badham and his sons, who built many Edenton homes. Mike Ervin, Edenton Historical Commission executive director, was impressed by how well they built carved door frames and ceiling arches without power tools. Town council member Sambo Dixon, calling the building "one of the most important African American sites in the state", said restoration of Kadesh A.M.E. Zion would lead to more emphasis on preserving buildings owned by African Americans. Damage from Hurricane Isabel in 2003 required using braces to hold up the walls, removing the Tiffany stained glass windows, and putting the bell in storage. The congregation had to find a new place to meet. Restoration will cost an estimated $1 million.[1]
