Ali France:Ali France is the ALP candidate in the federal seat of Dickson for the next federal election. Ali’s story is one of determination, true grit and resilience. Ali is the eldest of three children and was brought up to cherish Labor values. Her father, Peter Lawlor, a lawyer, was elected Labor member for Southport in 2001, in the Beattie government. He became the minister for Tourism and Fair Trading in Anna Bligh’s government until March 2012. Ali’s early career was as a journalist. She won the Queensland Cadet journalist of the year award in 1998. She was employed by the Courier Mail as a columnist, feature writer, and news reporter, located in Brisbane from 1998-2000. From 2000-2001, Ali worked as a senior High Court reporter for the Hong Kong i-mail. From there she went to the UK, and worked as Senior Press officer for the Health Care Commission for 4 years, and then as a TV producer for 2 years with Carbon Creative. Since January 2017, Ali has been working as a motivational speaker for her own company. Ali’s life changed forever in 2011. As a pedestrian in a shopping centre car park, an out of control car hit her and her young son. Because of this accident Ali lost her left leg and now moves with the aid of a prosthetic. As part of her recovery, Ali found new ambition in sport and took up outrigger canoeing. Ali has represented Australia at two world outrigger canoe championships and currently holds three world titles in sprint and marathon canoe events. Ali is a passionate advocate for people with disabilities and has recently had articles published in The Courier-Mail and on websites such as Mamamia and The Huffington Post. In 2017, Ali spoke at an Australian Defence Force event for R U Ok? Day, the National Labor Women's Conference in Adelaide and at a Welcome to Brisbane event at Tattersalls Racing Club.
