When I was an AOL subscriber, I often found myself blocked from contributing due to vandalism/disruptions caused by other editors working through the same IP number. In June and July 2006, programming efforts were increased and a significant step towards solving these inadvertant blocks was developed. The "block free" situation only continued for a short time however, and frequent autoblocks still prevent me from editing. My thanks to all the sympathetic adminstrators who release many of these blocks and allowed me to work. As of April 2007, I have been able to move to another internet provider.

editSorry
editThe anon using that account is a frequent vandal. I've unblocked that number. RickK 05:08, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC)
Unblocked?
editDid that take care of the problem? RickK 00:48, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC)
Sorry about that. What's your provider? RickK 00:53, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC)
I'm no techie, either, yeah, AOL is what I was looking for. That's weird, I'm on AOL, too, and I've never gotten a bogus block notice. I wonder how these things happen? RickK 19:23, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC)
Your block
editHi WB, I'm happy to unblock that IP address as Tony probably isn't around at the moment, but I'm confused as to how you can post if you're blocked. SlimVirgin (talk) 03:41, May 6, 2005 (UTC)
- You've got me there. This is the second time it has happened. The AOL system randomly assigns numbers, and changes them even while you are in the middle of something. Both times it prevented me from editing articles, but I was able to access my work pages and post on admin's talk pages. So, I suppose, being logged into Wiki at the time the block is placed probably has something to do with it. Thanks for your help. WBardwin 04:14, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
- Okay, well I've unblocked it, so you should be okay now. :-) SlimVirgin (talk) 04:23, May 6, 2005 (UTC)
I think that because of this edit I may have mistaken you for a particular user who, because of his previous bad pattern of behavior, has had a revert limitation applied by the arbitrators. Apologies for the mistake, and sorry I wasn't around to correct it. Thanks to SlimVirgin who did. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 11:22, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
Block
editI can't see any reocrd of that Ip being blocked recently.--nixie 05:35, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Must of been an autoblock, they don't last long, sorry for any inconvienience. --nixie 05:44, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
reason for block
editDone. Some prat yesterday was doctoring articles to include himself in them, notably adding himself in as HRH The Prince of Ireland in royal articles. When he wasn't stopping and was reverting all reverts I had to block him. If you find your yourself blocked like that - don't worry. It isn't any judgment on you, just another outbreak of vandalism that led to a block. Contact me or another admin and we'll remove it immediately. FearÉIREANN (talk) 17:32, 31 May 2005 (UTC)
Blocked?
editIf you can edit my Talk: page, you should be able to edit anything. I can't find evidence that that IP is blocked. What are you trying to edit, and what message are you getting? Jayjg (talk) 20:29, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks anyway, but User:Bishonen noticed my plea on User:Linuxbeak's talk and released it just a few moments ago. I really don't know why I can post in some places and not others when the block comes in. Maybe the system reads my IP address in some places and my Wiki user info on another. But it is a common characteristic whenever this happens. I wish the other guy on 207.200.116.132 would find something else to do. I appreciate your attention. WBardwin 20:34, 24 Jun 2005
What was going on there? I couldn't figure out why he was "partly" blocked, and I couldn't find the block in the block list. Jayjg (talk) 20:38, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Jayjg, Linuxbeak had blocked 207.200.116.132 and WBardwin wrote a message on User talk:Linuxbeak. I noticed it—I'm watching the pages because Linux is doing some heavy vandal-fighting—and unblocked the IP shortly afterwards, say 20:15 UTC. I interfered because I figured Linux might be gone for the weekend, as he hasn't been editing, and WBardwin and maybe others too would have an unconscionable wait. Perhaps you checked for the block after I'd already removed it? I was a little uncertain, since the range wasn't listed on Special:Blockip, but I checked with JRM on IRC and he told me to go ahead and unblock (and then he put the range on the list, too). Thanks for your patience, WBardwin. I bet it is an annoyance! :-( Bishonen | talk 21:53, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- The IP mentioned is an AOL cache proxy and should not be blocked for any length of time. I did some probing in the range and it seems to be wholly or mostly comprised of caches, so I added the range to the exclusion list. We can always narrow it down if that should be necessary, but better safe than sorry. JRM · Talk 22:31, 2005 Jun 24 (UTC)
AOL should be unblocked now
editSorry about that, will contact the admin that set the block--nixie 01:31, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- No idea why it would be kicking you off now that the block is gone, there were no subsequent autoblocks. Have you got cookies active and everything?--nixie 01:52, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Try rebooting, it may just be something in the cache, then if it keeps happening ask on the development section on the Village Pump.--nixie 01:57, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Blocks
editJust to let you know, Evil Monkey isn't actually blocking your IPs; its a software feature that prevents blocked users from using sockpuppets. Evil Monkey blocked certian usernames earlier (and blocked at least one of them at my request) because of the havoc they were reeking. Part of blocking a user account involves the software recoring the IP the account was using, and then the software automatically blocks the IP if anyone from that IP trys to use it later. I wanted you to know so you woudln't think it was Evil Monkey's fault; he just blocked abusive user accounts (not IPs) and you're being affected by a software feature. -- Essjay · Talk 09:21, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry about any inconvenience. As Essjay said above it is just that your IP was used by a vandal and so you blocked as well. Evil Monkey∴Hello 10:33, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I am sorry about that -- normally if I'm blocking an IP address I can check it against a list of AOL proxies to be sure I'm not tarring way too many people with the brush. I've never before blocked a username and had the autoblocker block another logged-in user -- a real shame. Please feel free to contact me any time this happens (my email, which is no secret here after all the committees I've served on, is my username at yahoo dot com -- that in case the blocker doesn't let you edit my talk page in the future). Best regards, Jwrosenzweig 17:18, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
Sorry I wasn't around, I hope you didn't have to wait very long before David pitched in. This is getting intolerable. I have just posted YAA, Yet Another Appeal, about it on WP:ANI, diff here (non-permanent diff, unfortunately, but it won't be hard to find in any case). Do put a comment of your own below my post if you like, that might have a good effect! Bishonen | talk 17:33, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
Regarding your email
editThanks for contacting me. The problem you describe is almost impossible to remedy. As you may know, we have a list of IP's that should be blocked for 15 minutes or less. These numbers also include AOL addresses. In your case, the 207.200.116.0 address range is not included. For a range to be added to the list, it needs to be pretty big. I can find out how much of 207.* is owned by AOL and determine whether it is enough to include in the (small) list. We do not want this list to be large and we definitely will not make any exceptions, as everyone and their brother will then want to be excepted which is of course out of the question. Inter\Echo 18:06, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
- Inter -- I believe that there has already been research done on that IP number and that it was decided to put the number on "the list." Below is a copy of material taken from my User File - AOL Block Collection. I would appreciate a followup, if the number was not listed as indicated here. Thank you for your help. WBardwin 19:01, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

I should have looked closer, the IP range is on the list now, but I feel it should be more clear to check for the ranges before blocking. I will look into getting this changed. Inter\Echo 19:49, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
I filed bug #2879 in direct response to this issue a while ago, but so far no developer has picked up on it. It seems obvious to me that this should be checked by software, as this is very straightforward to do. By contrast, admins seem to have an enormously hard time keeping track of the ranges, probably because blocking the bad guys is seen as more desirable than making sure the good guys can still access Wikipedia. It should be exactly the opposite, but nobody said being an administrator was easy.
For most vandals short blocks are just as effective as long ones; when the vandal sees the block they've had their fun and will go away. The vandals that come through rotating proxies are wholly unblockable to begin with; they "automatically" evade their blocks through the magic of changing IP addresses. No administrator has any business blocking addresses in the proxy ranges for more than 15 minutes; it hurts the innocent and doesn't keep the guilty out. JRM · Talk 17:04, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response and your interest in resolving the problem. It will be difficult to change the practices of "front line" admins as the vandal wars will always be with us. Hopefully, someone will make your software suggestion a priority in the future. It sounds like it would work well. Peace. WBardwin 17:21, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
Another block for the collection
editThe IP address was blocked by Zoe, due to its recent use by "Aesculapius75" for "repeated vandalism of Michael Parodi". The discussion is recorded below.
E-mailed this person -- please release this block. WBardwin 21:39, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- JRM --one more time -- "user name or IP address has been blocked by Zoe. The reason given for Aesculapius75's block is: "repeated vandalism of Michael Parodi". IP address is 207.200.116.67." Has Wiki thought about a "admin sandbox" to train people on how to block, including using "the list" of common IPs? Can we get this resolved in any fashion. Thank you. WBardwin 21:43, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- In this case, Zoe was completely innocent. Administrators cannot see IP addresses of registered accounts, for privacy reasons. What happens here is another excellent feature: the autoblocker. If a registered user who edits under an AOL proxy is blocked, the associating IP address will be autoblocked for 24 hours on the next edit. That could either be the original vandal or an innocent bystander. The autoblocker knows no remorse, or restricted IP lists. This cannot be solved without updating the software. JRM · Talk 21:54, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
Unfortunately, JRM is correct. When an admin blocks a logged in User, there is no way for us to tell what their IP address is, and we can't tell if we're blocking an AOL account or any other. Are you still blocked? I went to unblock you but there's no indication that you're still blocked. It's also really odd, since I'm an AOL account and I've never been blocked when a AOL account was blocked. Zoe 23:00, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. Yes, JRM kindly released the block. I don't understand the intricacies of the AOL/Proxy issue, but it does seem to hit me regularly. I'm even keeping what JRM calls a trophy page: User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. I hope the software guys can address the issue in the near future. Peace. WBardwin 02:55, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Zoe -- your block just hit me again, but I can edit talk pages. It seems strange, but has happened before. I'll go away for a little while and see if it clears by itself. If you see this fairly soon, please check and see if the block has been reapplied. Thanks. WBardwin 04:02, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
As far as I know, if you are blocked, the only page you can edit is your own Talk page. Being able to edit my page should mean that you're not really blocked. If you're still getting a block message, I'd take it up with a developer, like User:Brion Vibber, because something isn't working right. Zoe 05:02, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
- I've sent Brion Vibber a message, as you suggested. But his talk page clearly states that he pays little attention to any mail. I've notified the "bug" people in the past and received no response to date. So how about simply releasing the block as JRM did before? Thank you. WBardwin 06:10, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Try it now. I still don't understand how you can edit my Talk page and nothing else. Zoe 06:19, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
Success! Thanks. And it's not just your talk page -- I've been bouncing around on some of mine and other users -- doing a few little cleanup things. This whole process is always confusing to me. Peace. WBardwin 06:33, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- Outside clarification: AOL users are rotated through caching proxies. This means they potentially get a new IP address with every edit they make. Some of these addresses may be blocked, while others are not, which is what causes the seemingly erratic behaviour. The flip side is that vandals coming through AOL can't be effectively blocked either—you can disable their accounts, but this won't stop them from editing completely. It is a major PITA, of course. JRM · Talk 07:32, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
This is getting very old
edit"Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Rhobite. The reason given is this: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "DotSix". The reason given for DotSix's block is: "vandalism. glad to see you got yourself an account though."."
- Another block -- WBardwin 16:48, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
- I'm as frustrated by this as you are, but the administrators simply can't help it. We can petition the developers for changes in the software, but this is by no means a fast process. You are, of course, unblocked. JRM · Talk 17:06, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you -- appreciate your emotional support and attention, even if we can't do anything else. WBardwin 18:27, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
Concerning blocks
editI don't know if the suggestion has been floated before, but you could consider using IRC. There are administrators on the channel 24-7 and they will be happy to unblock you immediately. This is likely faster than posting on a talk page and hoping someone's available. Of course, I don't know if using IRC is an option for you.
Regretfully, I do not have the time to install the appropriate toolchain, learn PHP, plunge into the MediaWiki source and fix this problem myself, though I have the skill. I am cynically inclined to think that if any of the developers had an AOL account, it would be fixed much sooner... But who knows, it could be fixed tomorrow by some enterprising soul. JRM · Talk 18:47, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
Twice in one day
editI'm an innocent bystander hit by your block (information below). Please be aware that any block of AOL users has consequences -- it blocks other people randomly assigned the same IP number. Please see my User Page -- User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection -- and release the block so I can get some work done. Thank you. WBardwin 04:52, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
If the block you meant was 207.200.116.203, I've unblocked it (I wasn't the one that did that block, however). -- Curps 04:55, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
OK, I think I've released the underlying IP block for Aesculapius75. The problem is, I blocked a user by username here, not by IP address. There was no way to know that this was an AOL user. It seems the Wikipedia software automatically blocks the underlying IP address whenever a username is blocked. I don't think there's any way to avoid this. -- Curps 04:58, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the attention. Yes, I know its a software problem. User:JRM says it would be fairly easy to fix, but that it does not have any priority. I've been hit by two blocks today, so the frequency of my problem seems to be escalating. Maybe that reflects an increase in active vandals? If you are interested in this problem, please review my user page (see above) and weigh in on the situation with the powers that be. I would appreciate any consideration. WBardwin 05:15, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
I am an innocent victim of the vandal crusade. When you block an AOL user -- even if they have a Wiki account -- you block all the editors that are randomly assigned that IP number. I've been hit by three different blocks in less than 24 hours, yours being the latest (see below). As you know, I am a serious contributing editor and, as I like to sneak in 30 minutes to an hour of Wiki work several times during the day, these blocks are becoming very irritating. It is a software problem, according to User:JRM, and doesn't have much priority with the designers. If you are interested in this problem, please take a look at my user page -- User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. Any influence with the powers that be would be appreciated. In the meantime -- if you are hanging around -- please release your block. WBardwin 06:24, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Dmcdevit. The reason given is this: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Donald R. Alford". The reason given for Donald R. Alford's block is: "dotsix sockpuppet, vandalism". Your IP address is 207.200.116.74.
- I'm really sorry about this. I unblocked the IPs (though was that pointless because you edited my talk page? was it already released?). The thing is, I wasn't even on a vandal crusade, just one :(. I'm typically very careful about these things. I was just blocking a vandal reincarnation and the stupid autoblocker got you. So sorry. Why does it seem to happen to you so much more than anyone else? Or is that just a measure of how many good AOL contributers we have? :) Ah well, keep up the good work, and I hope we get this fixed. - Thanks -- I was finally able to add that paragraph to Martha Washington after trying, at intervals, all day. The ability to edit talk pages seems to be a funny quirk -- I can even sometimes edit talk pages on articles, but not the articles themselves. At other times, the system won't even let me edit my talk page. It is a mystery to me. Appreciate your help. I think I'll put the thing to bed and try to do a little more tomorrow. WBardwin 07:22, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- I've got a nifty solution. If you were an admin you'd be able to unblock yourself whenever you wanted :) I'm actually serious, I thought about it when I was unblocking you, but I've seen you do great work, like on Black Death and stuff around there that I've contributed to. And you've been around for a while and are on the Wikipedia:List of non-admins with high edit counts. I think you are due. I'd be happy to nominate you. Dmcdevit·t 07:32, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry to come to this so late; I've only just logged on (it's 09:05 here). It's odd that I've never been blocked in this way, though I'm also an AOL user (I sometimes edit from my University account, but I usually edit from home). Perhaps you have a concentration of vandals in your area (or is there a local school that uses AOL?).
Have you tried logging off and back on again, in order to get a new IP address? I assume that you have; in the case of range blocks that wouldn't work, of course. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:11, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- This "targeting" is an AOL mystery to me, altogether. As for a school -- I do live within 10 blocks of a technical college and within 10 miles of a university. Both with lots of bored students up much too late, I suppose. Thanks for your interest, Mel. WBardwin 16:08, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

editWhen you block individuals using the Autoblock software (see below), you also block innocent individuals who are randomly assigned the same IP number. This happens to me frequently. Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Zscout370. The reason given is this: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Mickey657". The reason given for Mickey657's block is: "imposter".
Your IP address is 207.200.116.203.
- I've released the AOL block. It is unfortunate that you are so frequently blocked because of autoblocks (and we have requested repeatedly at Bugzilla for IP blocks to not affect logged in users), but please remember that autoblocks are set by the software and not by the blocking admin. (It just uses our name.) Admins do not get any notice when the autoblocker activates, we completely unaware of when it places a block, and we are powerless to stop it from doing so. We are not even able to see what IP has been blocked to determine whether it is an AOL IP or not; the block list masks autoblocked IP addresses with a code. We cannot see what IP the blocked user was using to be able to tell if it was an AOL IP.
- Perhaps it would be helpful for you to complain to AOL about their use of constantly changing (sometimes from one edit to the next) proxies. If enough customers complain about the service, they will be forced to change. It would also be helpful for you to vote on Bug 550 at Bugzilla. You might also consider an RfA, as you would then be able to unblock yourself. -- Essjay · Talk 08:52, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I unblocked the IP address, did that help? I'm still really amazed that you keep running into this problem, when I have NEVER encountered it, and I'm on AOL. Zoe 09:16, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
AOL autoblock continued
editHi WBardwin -- sorry about the autoblock problem; that's actually the first time since I've been an admin that anyone has complained to me about being autoblocked; but I'm glad to see Essjay was on at the right time to get you unblocked (I had already turned in for the night). Unfortunately there's no way to know what IP address is behind a vandal, and no way to know whether it's static or dynamic. Vandals like "Mickey656" who hit people's user pages we tend to block on sight. From reading the discussion above it seems that it hits you with uncommon frequency, but that a bug report/fix request is in progress.
If it happens again, whether or not it was me who did it, send me a note and I'll unblock as soon as I get it. Sorry for the inconvenience again, and happy editing. Antandrus (talk) 14:59, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Golbez. The reason given is this: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Mickey658". The reason given for Mickey658's block is: "someone obviously with a vendetta; all edits have been vandalism". Your IP address is 207.200.116.6.
- I've unblocked a couple of those Micky6** autoblocks; see if that helps. Sorry about this; I wish there was a workaround. I wonder if AOL assigns IPs geographically--it may be that the vandal lives near you. Antandrus (talk) 16:50, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks -- appreciate your attention. Oddly enough, when I get hit by a block, I can usually edit talk pages, even those on articles, but I can never edit articles. But, sometimes, I can't even edit my own talk page. User:JRM seems to think that AOL's pattern of constantly shifting IP numbers allows some fluidity. Being able to write on talk pages does allow me to find helpful admins like you.
Sorry about the repetitive entries on your page history. Wiki has been doing that quite often, lately. I promise I'm not trying to rack up my edit count. Peace. WBardwin 17:29, 19 August 2005 (UTC)

Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Olivier. The reason given is this: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "WikiNazi". The reason given for WikiNazi's block is: ""i am WikiNazi. i want you all to join me in vandalizing wikipedia"". Your IP address is 205.188.117.69.
Oh, dear, six autoblocks
editWBardwin, sorry, I don't see what you see in the block log: I believe only you can see the IP. Including the exact time of a block would help (if indeed you can see that!). I'd rather not release all the six wikiNazi autoblocks by Olivier that I see, especially as I know the wiki is having genuine Nazi attack trouble. Can you tell which of these affects you (unless indeed yours has been already release)?
- 10:56, 24 August 2005, Olivier blocked #32849 (expires 10:56, 25 August 2005) (unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "WikiNazi". The reason given for WikiNazi's block is: ""i am WikiNazi. i want you all to join me in vandalizing wikipedia"".)
- 10:52, 24 August 2005, Olivier blocked #32848 (expires 10:52, 25 August 2005) (unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "WikiNazi". The reason given for WikiNazi's block is: ""i am WikiNazi. i want you all to join me in vandalizing wikipedia"".)

- 10:39, 24 August 2005, Olivier blocked #32844 (expires 10:39, 25 August 2005) (unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "WikiNazi". The reason given for WikiNazi's block is: ""i am WikiNazi. i want you all to join me in vandalizing wikipedia"".)
- 10:35, 24 August 2005, Olivier blocked #32843 (expires 10:35, 25 August 2005) (unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "WikiNazi". The reason given for WikiNazi's block is: ""i am WikiNazi. i want you all to join me in vandalizing wikipedia"".) --Bishonen | talk 16:54, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
- Already unblocked all of them. When in doubt, unblock (and it's very likely "WikiNazi" ran through a whole range of AOL proxies before being unblocked). We admins cannot see the IP addresses at all, for reasons of *cough* privacy. The autoblocker has no such moral compunctions, of course. JRM · Talk 17:06, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

Here's your rotating AOL user
editHi, please don't give up! Here's your second barnstar. It goes round and round, just like an AOL user rotating through the cache proxies. Bishonen | talk 17:50, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

- Counsel of desperation, D.: try me when he's not. Always at the very bottom of my page, please, or I may miss it. I'll be able to move faster and less hesitantly if you can include the exact time of the block. Does the message you get show it? The IP doesn't actually help, I don't see it in the blocklist (even though you see it in the block message). Bishonen | talk 21:59, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
- However, do always provide the IP. (Some blocks really are blocks of one particular IP.) In general, the exact time isn't needed either. Just search for "autoblocked because your IP address..." There may be multiple IP addresses, but most likely all of those will be AOL proxies from an account that's been rotating through them. JRM · Talk 22:02, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

New AOL Blocks
editOwenX has blocked me from editing. I left him the following message.
- Please be aware that AOL users do not have a static IP number -- it rotates through so that the selection is relatively random or based on region. I have a long history of being impacted by blocks directed at others. Please see: User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. I would appreciate a prompt release of the block. Information below. Thank you. Merovingian has blocked me from editing -- based on that rotating proxy. New administrators seem to go through a phase of trying to punish all AOL users. I left him the note below:
- Please note that you have blocked an AOL proxy address -- which randomly rotates among users. AOL users cannot control which number they are assigned, and blocking the number for any length of time is ineffective in fighting vandalism. Please see my user page User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection for a history of adminstrative discussion and action regarding these blocks. They seem to hit me often. Please release your block. Information below. Thank you. WBardwin 06:01, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Your IP address is 207.200.116.202. Please include this address, along with your username, in any queries you make. Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Merovingian. The reason given is: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Kkkboi". The reason given for Kkkboi's block is: "vandal/troll".
- I've unblocked that IP as requested. // Pathoschild 07:10, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- (after edit conflict) It appears User:Pathoschild unblocked your IP address. Are you still having difficulties? By the way, you may wish to reconsider the tone of the message you leave administrators. Your message seems to imply that you got blocked out of carelessness or that an AOL IP address was deliberately blocked. Merovingian is a longtime administrator and the suggestion that he desires to punish all AOL users isn't very nice, especially since it is just speculation. Please assume good faith. Perhaps you don't realize, but if you look at the block message you received, you will be able to see that Merovingian did not directly block the IP address, but rather blocked User:Kkkboi. He would not be able to know that Kkkboi was using AOL, as administrators do not have access to registered users' IP addresses, for privacy's sake. The way MediaWiki is configured, when someone is blocked, the IP address they are using is also automatically blocked. For instance, if someone were to block me right now, I would not be able to circumvent the block by logging out of Wikipedia and editing as an anonymous user or using a sockpuppet account. If the blocking administrator (or anyone else) examines the Special:Ipblocklist later, he may see autoblock entries (under his name!) although a code number is displayed instead of the IP address. So in short, we have no way of knowing what the IP number is unless the user tells us. When Merovingian blocked Kkkboi, he would not be able to know that Kkkboi was using AOL, and if he were to later examine the blocklist and notice the autoblocked entries, he would still have no way of knowing what the IP addresses were, much less determine their origin. Rather than suggest that the blocking administrator is incompetent or out to get AOL editors, you might consider leaving a polite message thanking them for helping to fight vandalism, but that you are using AOL and were caught by one of their autoblocks; would they mind unblocking the address? A similar message would suffice for a different administrator. Not only might this produce faster results, it will also help keep Wikipedia a pleasant place to edit. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. — Knowledge Seeker দ 07:17, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
I'll take your note of chastisement under advisement -- be aware that the note you piggybacked on (whether on my talk page or a friendly admin's page) is less "polite" than the note I left the admin who initiated the block. Keep in mind that this is not a new experience for me. Also I have an entire archive of AOL blocking problems, none of them directed at me. See User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. The IP address I am most often assigned has been included, at my request, on "the list" that should not be blocked for any length of time. I have had several helpful adminstrators intervene for me as we have tried to make the system/AOL interaction more efficient. However, vandalism gets more attention than regular editing and so AOL users are punished, no matter what polite wording we want to use. A couple of admins tell me the training they received in this area is minimal and that they only learn from interacting with users with problems -- like me. But, thanking them for using up the time I can allocate to Wiki?? -- well, I'll think about it. Thanks for your willingness to respond, at any rate. WBardwin 07:31, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. I realize this must be frustrating for you. Several months ago, while I was temporarily using dial-up before my cable modem was installed, I kept getting hit with a block intended for a problem user who also sometimes used my IP address—of course, since I am in administrator, the only incovenience to me was that I had to unblock the IP and report my actions on WP:AN/I, whereas you have to find someone to unblock you. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. That being said, I'd like to ask you not to take your frustrations out on well-meaning users. It's good that you got the IP address listed on the block page, and of course new ways of dealing with vandalism from AOL users will always be welcome, due to the unusual way AOL assigns IP addresses. But that's not really relevant here—I'm not sure you fully understood my message. Merovingian did not block an IP address, AOL or otherwise. He blocked User:Kkkboi. Unbeknownst to him, Kkkboi was using AOL—indeed, there would be no way for Merovingian to know this; administrators do not have access to registered users' IP addresses. Later, Kkkboi or someone else (possibly you) tried to edit from the same IP address (logged in or anonymous). The software recognized the IP address as one used by a recently blocked user and so it automatically blocked the IP address. There is currently no way to disable this. So at this point Merovingian has no idea that an IP address has been autoblocked under his name. Even if he for some reason visits the IP blocklist, he will see something like (for example) "07:49, December 15, 2005, RoyBoy blocked #68550 (expires 07:49, December 16, 2005) (Unblock) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Hiveman". The reason given for Hiveman's block is: "Spam".)". Note that the IP address is not visible. At this point, aside from the blocked users, no one has any idea that an AOL IP address was involved. There is no way for them to know. Even if Merovingian was wondering "Hmm, I hope Kkkboi wasn't using AOL to edit and I hope the software didn't then autoblock an AOL IP address", it would not be possible for him to find out. This has nothing to do with punishing AOL users. The point is, Merovingian acted absolutely appropriately. A user was creating problems and he blocked him. We can't stop blocking people because there is a possibility they are using AOL. Unfortunately, the only recourse is for you to ask to be unblocked. There is no easy solution to this, and it will happen again. It might happen the next time I block a registered user. And you'll have to go through the same thing again. But it's not the blocking administrator's fault. As Bishonen remarked, it is the fault of the software for not letting us disable autoblocking and the fault of AOL for continually reassigning IP addresses. You can thank the administrator for doing his job properly. It's not his fault you got autoblocked. Accusing people of ignorance or deliberate overblocking is counterproductive, since there is no behavior the administrator can modify for next time. And again, it does little to promote a productive atmosphere on Wikipedia. I realize the concept of autoblocking, and that administrators aren't necessarily deliberately blocking your IP address, might be difficult to understand. Please let me know if you have any questions. — Knowledge Seeker দ 08:03, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry it keeps happening, W. I've unblocked Kkkboi and three autoblocks stemming from it (jostling Pathoschild, I suppose), please let me know if you're OK now. It's true that it's a (very buglike) feature of the software, and not any failing on the part of the blocking admin, that keeps biting you. And the idiot system of AOL, naturally. Best, Bishonen | talk 07:24, 15 December 2005 (UTC).
I think the matter has already been explained above, but I just wanted to give a small apology about collateral damage caused by my blocking of Kkkboi. --King of All the Franks 08:01, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Looks like I'm a little late. I'm sorry this keeps happening to you. I don't know what the current status is, but we really need to fix the autoblocker... Dmcdevit·t 08:55, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
It looks like I'm late to the party. I regret the inconvenience also. Thanks for calling on me. Tom Haws 16:26, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for your well-thought-out message. You're absolutely right; there are many of us who wish we could disable the autoblocker, especially for specific blocks, and if there is some way I can assist in promoting that change, I would like to. You have every right to be frustrated by being hit with blocks not intended for you. And it may very well be that some of those are by administrators blocking an AOL IP address for too long. I just wanted to make sure you realized that not all of these blocks are of AOL IP addresses, that an any administrator, including those you contacted for assistance, might be the one inadvertantly blocking you next time—and calling them a "dingbat" likely won't be productive. Incidentally, regarding your comments on User talk:Bishonen#AOL Blocks, you are correct: when I checked my watchlist and noticed a user leaving comments with the edit summary "Release me!" on multiple administrators' talk pages, naturally I stopped by to see if I could help. The problem had been solved by that point, but I hoped I could help clear up some misconceptions—Merovingian's an easy-going guy, but there are many users who might get upset at being insulted or criticized at something they have no control over. Incidentally, it is quite difficult to get on my bad side: I am certainly not angry or upset with you, and I apologize if my tone was overly censorious. The next time you get inadvertantly blocked, you may contact me as well, if you wish. A couple other options: check recent changes and leave a message for an administrator you recognize, or perhaps better would be the block log (or the IP block list, although you should of course ignore the autoblock entries, since there is no guarantee that administrator has been on Wikipedia recently). Another option is the IRC channel, although I've never used IRC and am not familiar with how it works. I hope you don't encounter this problem too often, and please leave me a message if you run into any trouble. — Knowledge Seeker দ 21:44, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Hello again
editI see the AOL block problem continues to plague us, and you in particular. I'm not as persistently around on Wikipedia as I used to be, but I'd nevertheless like to hint that I'm around again. Please feel free to use my proxy unblock page again; at least one other administrator is watching this and I hope others will pick it up as they read this.
I know some people are now watching recent changes and vandalism through an IRC channel, which gets very good response time; I'll see if I can get them to add the unblock page and your talk page to the special attention list, so we can handle this more expediently than having to page random admins until someone who's awake and attentive responds, perhaps having to explain the whole affair yet again. editMultiple AOL blocks to start the New Year
editMessage to User:Bhadani - Please be aware that when you block rotating IP numbers used by AOL you are unlikely to hit your target vandal. IP address is 207.200.116.132 - this IP number has been placed on "the list" of rotating proxy numbers which should not be blocked. I am a registered user on Wiki, and am often hit by such blocks. Another AOL block
editNote left for User:DragonflySixtyseven -- Please be aware that when you place a block on a IP address used by AOL, you rarely hit your target. Instead, innocent users get blocked for other's vandalism or misbehavior. Such IP addresses, including the one below, are on a list available to administrators and should never be blocked for long/indefinate periods of time. I have a long history of being impacted by such blocks. Please see User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection for a history and decisions made on this problem. I would appreciate a prompt release of this and related blocks. Thank you. WBardwin 09:31, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
- Your IP address is 207.200.116.134. Your user name or IP address has been blocked by DragonflySixtyseven.
- User:207.200.116.134 has not been blocked recently; the only IP addresses User:DragonflySixtyseven has blocked recently are User:65.117.158.6 and User:67.82.159.228. Were you hit by the autoblocker again? If so, you need to provide the name of the account that was blocked, since it was a registered account that was blocked, not your IP address. Registered users' IP addresses are private and administrators do not have access to them. Please don't imply that DragonflySixtyseven had any way of knowing that an AOL IP address would be autoblocked by his block. Copying the entire block message here will allow us to quickly unblock you. — Knowledge Seeker দ 09:45, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Let's go over MediaWiki's ever so helpful and privacy respecting block system again, and why it's hardly optimal.
What happened here is that DragonflySixtyseven blocked a registered user who was being an ass. Which one is impossible to tell in retrospect. Said registered user then tried editing while logged out (clever!). In response, the autoblocker kicked in and blocked that address for 24 hours. Now, where is that address in the block list?
Nowhere, because "to respect privacy" (we all know how sensitive IP addresses are, especially of AOL proxies) IP addresses are obfuscated. So it will have been something like #XXXXX, with X a digit. If I'm not mistaken, WBardwin should have gotten a message that told him he was blocked by DragonflySixtyseven, but I do not know the reason it specified. The system should provide a reason that looks like this: "autoblocked because your IP address has been used recently by [[User:Foo]]". With this block reason in hand administrators can look in the logs and find the obfuscated IP address that's targeted by this. Without this, they cannot. You could try to find the block based on the time of the message, but this is unreliable.
Who is to blame? The developers. There are at least three ways of solving this problem, some complementary:
- If the autoblocker blocks someone, make it clear the autoblocker is doing it and not the administrator involved in the original block. Make this abundantly clear in messages, too. Add the time of the original block.
- Implement a blacklist of addresses the autoblocker must never block automatically, or at most a few minutes, just like administrators are required to do.
- Turn off the stupid autoblocker. If people log out and continue to edit, require administrators to do the re-blocking themselves. The autoblocker has proven to be incompetent. Apropos privacy: why should a blocked user who tries to evade the block have his IP address kept secret? You forfeit your right to have your IP address kept a secret when you violate our policies. Anonymous users are treated no better.
In the meantime, the most productive "codes of conduct" for everyone involved are:
- If you're an innocent user hit by a block, ask the administrator (or an administrator) to unblock you. Mention your IP, the block reason, and the fact that you are using an AOL proxy. Do not imply the administrator must have blocked you directly and ignored the AOL block list; it's very well possible they didn't. To play it safe, you can contact an administrator of which you know they understand all this. You don't necessarily need the original admin to do it.
- If you're an administrator, educate yourself on proxies, the autoblocker, and How Stuff Works (tm). The last thing we need is ignorant admins going "I don't understand, I didn't block you, should I unblock you?" See if the IP specified really is an AOL proxy. If it is, unblock without question. Simply enter the IP address with a block time of 0, this should release the block regardless of how it came to be, and you won't need to delve into the blocked addresses list. (Disclaimer: I don't know if this works; I "seem to recall" it does/did.)
- If you're a developer, just go on doing whatever it is that you're doing. There aren't enough of you anyway to fix these things, so don't bother. Thanks for the autoblocker, though; it's a real help. JRM · Talk 16:28, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
- If I recall, I tried that once (just "unblocking" the IP address), but it got immediately re-autoblocked when the autoblocked user tried to edit. I'm not certain anymore, though; I'll try that the next time I'm trying to free someone from an autoblock. It's a good tip. — Knowledge Seeker দ 17:28, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Blocked Again
editHere's another AOL IP Block -- problem continues. And my watch list has a lot of vandalism tonight. WBardwin 06:33, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
- Your IP address is 207.200.116.14. Please include this address, along with your username (if you are a registered user), in any queries you make. Your user name or IP address has been blocked by User:Jtdirl. The reason given is: Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Jmk56". The reason given for Jmk56's block is: "legal threat".
The AOL block was for 15 minutes and was applied to a user who has made legal threats against another user and had his account blocked indefinitely for doing so. He has been using AOL IPs all night to post new threats against the user he first made the threat to and then against me. The block will have expired by now but I have had to protect his blocked user account to stop him going there as an IP to post more legal threats. I know blocking AOL can be a pain but when it comes to a user threatening others there is no option. At this stage WP needs to get tough with AOL over their way of organising IPs. It is bad enough when their 'we don't give a shit' attitude to complaints means that WP has to face constant vandalism. But when people can then use AOL IPs to threaten people, that is another thing entirely. The user in question seems to be one of the perrenial nutters who claims 'ownership' of an article and then threatens to sue anyone who edits 'his' article in a way they themselves do not approve of. - None the less -- the block keeps me from monitoring my watch list, removing vandalism and doing constructive editing. And your vandal will simply move on to the next IP number. Productive software, huh. Oh, well. Good night to all. WBardwin 06:53, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I read for about an hour and loaded the dishwasher. The "fifteen minute" block is still in effect. I would appreciate it if you could revert back to my last edit on Elizabeth Cady Stanton at least -- two successive vandals. Hopefully, I'll be able to edit over the weekend. Best wishes and good luck on your problem editor. However, I don't think there is anything actionable about threatening legal action. WBardwin 08:25, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

There is nothing actionable about it. But it was ruled some time ago that users making legal threats were to be automatically blocked from WP. That has now been the policy for some time. If the claim is of a claim over content of the WP (ie, a copyright infringement, etc) no ban is imposed, but the threat based on to the foundation. If however a user tries to force their opinion on someone else by threatening to sue another user, that immediately results in a ban. In blocking him for making threats I was simply enforcing policy per rulings by Jimbo and the Arbcom. FearÉIREANN \(caint) 19:27, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

AOL and IP blocks
editPlease be aware that when a AOL user/IP number is blocked, even with the autoblocker, it impacts other innocent users who are randomly assigned that IP number. Most AOL IP numbers are on the list of numbers that should be blocked for only short periods of time. This is a common problem for me. Please see my user page User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. I would appreciate a prompt release of this block. Information below. Thank you. WBardwin 22:18, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Today's AOL block
editPlease be aware that IP numbers used by AOL are not static, but rotate between multiple users. Every time these IP numbers are blocked, you will impact innocent editors. And, it is likely, that your vandal has simply moved on. This problems is addressed by having "a list" of numbers which should not be blocked by administrators for any length of time. However, blocking innocent users is still a problem and impacts me regularly. Please see my user page User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection for the long history. I would appreciate a prompt release of this block. Information below. Thank you. WBardwin 01:36, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

207.200.116.13 block
editHello,
We generally try to keep AOL blocks short. However, in this case the block was incorrectly set at 24 hours. I investigated and found that in a key piece of internal documentation used by admins, the netmask range was specified in an inconsistent way (207.200.0.0/18 rather than 207.200.64.0/18), which caused me to set an incorrect length for the block. My apologies. I have fixed the wording of the internal documentation. The address has been unblocked, any future blocks on it should be much shorter. -- Curps 00:10, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Nomination for Adminship
editWould adminship be an asset to you, being able to unban your IP while you edit and re-apply the ban to block vandals (if necessary). I don't have the time to nominate you at the moment, but if someone else would I think it would be well warranted. Tawker 08:37, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
A New AOL Block
editNote to ESkog -- please be aware that AOL users are blocked by the auto blocker and by block requests from admins based on shared IP numbers. I am a long term user, with a history of many of these inadvertant blocks. Please see my user file User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. Information on this block is found below. I would appreciate a prompt release. Thank you. WBardwin 08:01, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

AOL/IP related Blocks
editNote left for Deckiller: Please be aware that when you or the autoblocker block a proxy used by AOL, you are not blocking one individual but anyone who is randomly assigned that number by their Internet provider. This includes registered Wiki editors. Due to this situation, this proxy number, and related numbers, should not be blocked for any lengthy periods of time. I experience this problem frequently. Please see my User Page User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection for a record of my experiences. Information on the block is found below. I would appreciate a prompt release of this block. Thank you. WBardwin 00:22, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Note left for Samuel Blanning on this morning's block as I attempted a copy edit on Lek (animal behavior). Please be aware that when you block, or set up an autoblock, of an IP proxy, you will impact all users (registered or unregistered) who are randomly assigned that IP number by their internet provider. As an AOL user, this happens to me frequently. Please see my User Page User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection for a record of these blocks. Because of this problem, these IP's should not be blocked for any length of time. Information on the block found below. I would appreciate a prompt release of this block. Thank you. Latest AOL Blocks
editNote left for Kungfuadam: Please be aware that when you or the autoblocker targets "common" proxy numbers, you are unlikely to block your target and are very likely to block innocent users who are randomly assigned the number by AOL or other providers. Note left for Deckiller: Please be aware that when you block, or initiate an autoblock, on a proxy number used by AOL, you are unlikely to block your target but will block innocent users, anon or registered. This happens to me frequently. Please see User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. Information found below. However, your reason for blocking does not make much sense to me. I would appreciate a prompt release of this block, but you appear to be on holiday. Hopefully I can grab another admin's attention. WBardwin 03:06, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- You were blocked by Deckiller for the following reason (see our blocking policy): "Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Gentzkowmp". Note left for Tawker: Please be aware that when you block a proxy number used by AOL that you, in effect, block anyone the service may randomly assign that number. You are unlikely to "hit" your target vandal, and so Wiki policy is that these numbers are only to be blocked for brief intervals, such as 15 minutes. A "list" of these proxy numbers is maintained for admin reference. I experience this problem frequently. Please see User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection for an archive of these incidents. AOL/Proxy blocks
editHello, Curps. Please be aware that when you or the autoblocker blocks IP numbers used by AOL you block innocent anon users and registered users. I recognize that this is a software problem with the autoblocker, but this happens to me frequently. Blocked thrice -- one right after another. Managed to leave the following message on a couple of talk pages this time.
Please be aware that when you block or autoblock a user assigned a proxy by AOL, you will inadvertantly block innocent users. In fact, with the rotating proxy, it is unlikely you will hit your vandal at all. These IP numbers are included on the list for administrators, and should not be blocked for more than 15 minutes at a time. This problem impacts me regularly. - Hello WBardin, thanks for the heads up, we are all well aware of the problem(s) caused by AOL vandalism. Is there any reason you prefer to use the native AOL web browser? You could easily obviate this situation by utilizing any number of free web browsers, such as Mozilla or FireFox. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 08:00, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- This problem is bound to happen again, due to the round robin method AOL employs to assign IP addresses. Please review Wikipedia:Advice_to_AOL_users#How_to_bypass_the_AOL_proxies as this should permanently resolve the issues you've been experiencing. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 08:05, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
- My employer sets up (and pays for) the system I use at home and allows me to often work at home as well. So, system contents must closely match the office. - Is this a Windows-based operating system? If the laptop is clamped down such that it will not allow additional software (such as Mozilla or Firefox) to be installed, try the HTTPS method using Internet Explorer instead the next time you are autoblocked. If you wouldn't mind, drop me an email confirming whether or not this actually works, I'm interested to know the results. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 08:10, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

- From his talk page User:David Shield is requesting an release from this block as well. He states he is not an article of clothing either. It sounds like no one wants to overrule User:Danny because he's a pal of Jimbo. He has placed at least a dozen blocks/autoblocks on IP's related to Shield, each for 24 hours. So, does this action override the AOL/IP list of numbers to be blocked only for limited time periods? By what authority? Someone has appealed to Danny on Shield's behalf -- would someone do the same for me? Appreciate any help. WBardwin 02:54, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- Danny is not a "pal" of Jimbo, he's a Wikimedia Foundation employee. --Cyde Weys 04:42, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

- The most recent message stated: "Your IP address is 207.200.116.198." But, from looking at the block page, I suspect Danny's autoblock(s) have impacted about 12 commonly used AOL numbers. AOL/IP Blocking
editMessage left for Rx StrangeLove. Please be aware that when you block an IP used by AOL, you are effectively blocking all users who are randomly assigned that number. You may not reach your target at all. Please check the reference list provided to administrators on these IP numbers. The general rule on these numbers is that they should only be blocked for very limited periods of time, usually 15 minutes. As an somewhat unwilling AOL user, I am often impacted by these type of blocks. Please see User:WBardwin/AOL Block Collection. I would appreciate a prompt release of this block. Information below. Clown's question: Last week, I suggested that you try connecting to Wikipedia using the HTTPS method as described at Wikipedia:Advice to AOL users#How_to_bypass_the_AOL_proxies, have you had any luck with this or givent his a chance? - To answer your question, Clown, I will respond here as with an autoblock I can no longer post on other's talk pages. First -- the "list" includes a recommendation for only 15 minutes blocks for shared IP addresses. 24 hours is just unreasonable, and I would think any admin should release that block. Second, in regard to the link/suggestion you provided, it would be encouraged for me to to consult with the techs at work for approval to use that access, primarily because of security concerns or because it would require me, not the company, to register with the site. I have to keep a list of all registered sites. I haven't yet consulted with them. And, as I am word oriented and resist tech talk, clarification of the "instructions" would be very useful before I made the request. For example: My response to the following is "Huh?" https is a URI scheme which is syntactically identical to the http: scheme normally used for accessing resources using HTTP. Using an https: URL indicates that HTTP is to be used, but with a different default port and an additional encryption/authentication layer between HTTP and TCP. So -- release anyone? - If I can be of any help getting you to use https, let me know. You can login here. I don't understand your objection above, but since I haven't been following this too closely, I might be missing something. I'm just trying to help, as I hate to see you blocked. —Viriditas | Talk 22:57, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Basically, instead of using the browser integrated into AOL, do and download Firefox and use that to access Wikipedia. And don't use http://en.wikipedia.org , use https://en.wikipedia.org . That should solve your problems. --Cyde Weys 23:07, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Your question on AOL/IP Block solution
editIn answer to your question, Clown, I initially responded on my talk page as an autoblock normally restricts me from posting on other's talk pages. So a modified copy here. First -- the "list" includes a recommendation for only 15 minutes blocks for shared IP addresses. 24 hours is just unreasonable, and I would think any admin should have released the first block. Second, in regard to the link/suggestion you provided, my computer is owned, maintained and secured by my employer. I am very strongly encouraged to consult with the techs at work for approval to use this type of access, primarily because of security concerns or because it would require me, not the company, to register with the site. I got permission to register with Wikipedia in the first place, and I would certainly have to receive approval for Firefox. The process in not onerous, just time consuming, and I haven't yet consulted with them. Thanks for your interest. WBardwin 19:49, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
- The Firefox browser is not a prerequisite for a secure connection to Wikipedia. The problem is that autoblocks, by default, are for 24 hours and it is not always readily apparent that it is affecting AOL. If you are running Windows or MacOS, then I assume you already have Internet Explorer installed. If so, please try connecting to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:Userlogin the next time you are impacted by an autoblock, and let me know if this is a successful work around. If your employer allows you to edit Wikipedia on their corporate property, then they would likely be happier to know you are doing it in a secure fashion. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 02:36, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
AOL Block and Bypass Attempt
editI was autoblocked from editing and, after receiving verbal permission from my employer's computer security people, tried using the secure access: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:Userlogin. There were mixed results. Even after registering and copying the certificate, each page on Wikipedia called up a security alert on the AOL/Company system. Each time, on each page, I had to use three keystrokes and two screens to verify that I recognized a security threat and authorized the system to access that individual page. You can see that this really slowed things up. Even so, there was one Wiki article and User:Can't sleep, clown will eat me's user page that the system completely refused to let me access. And, it significantly alters the format, type face and layout of my User page. Odd? Overall, cumbersome and slow, but at least I could run through my watch list for vandals. Never the less, -- a release please. Information found below. Activating template. WBardwin 06:07, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Message for Deco
editHi -- I am an AOL user and was just blocked under the following information:
- Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Deco for the following reason (see our blocking policy): Patent vandalism Your IP address is 207.200.116.134.
I see no reason why this would be directed at me, so I assume it is due to the rotating AOL/IP system. If you would check the administrators "list" of IP addresses, you will see that this 207 number and its variants are AOL and so should not be blocked for any significant length of time. I would appreciate a prompt release. Activating template. Thank you. WBardwin 04:30, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
{{unblock|AOL/IP block/autoblock}}
Well, I admit it, I don't always totally check especially when the anti vandal bots are screaming like mad at us, anyways, you're unblocked -- Tawker 04:34, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm sorry to say this, but we've been experiencing a pretty bad vandal attack from the IP range 207.200.116.0/24 ... it's been going on for longer than a day now. As soon as we unblock it continues again at a rate of many vandalisms per minute. I highly suggest that you get in contact with AOL and complain about how your quality of service is being affected by their refusal to do anything useful to either fix their proxy servers or deal with problem users. --Cyde↔Weys 04:33, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- I've talked to "them" several times. "They" are really very low level workers and really don't care. Their job is just to see that you are successfully online. The big bosses who make decisions aren't available and I suspect really wouldn't care either-- their system works for the vast majority of their users and sites. If they lose me (which my employer will not allow), they'll pick up six people to replace me. So what leverage would you suggest I try? I doubt pressure about Wikipedia will ever change AOL corporate policy or operating methods. WBardwin 04:41, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hi WBardwin. My sincerest apologies; however, the 207.200.116.* range has recently become a victim of a long term DoS vandalbot attack, and I'm afraid this entire range will likely be blocked quite frequently in the days to come. You may want to see this for more information. Essentially, the second the block expires the vandal is right back at it, editing at very rapid rates and causing a lot of headaches for many. Currently I would advise not unblocking this range for a significant length of time. Sorry for the inconvenience. AmiDaniel (talk) 04:36, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- since the http secure signin also is blocked -- do you just suggest I go away? WBardwin 04:41, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- I honestly don't know what to say--it's a pickle. If you have a library or a local internet café you could go to in order to edit, that may be a solution. This is a DoS vandal, and he's succeeding his mission currently. Until something is done about the AOL problem, I really don't know what to tell you. Sorry. AmiDaniel (talk) 04:51, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

What is a DoS vandal? WBardwin 04:56, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oh sorry, a Denial of service vandal is a vandal intent upon disabling access to a site to others such as yourself. Basically, the guy knows all of AOL's weaknesses and is exploiting them to ensure that no AOL user will be able to edit Wikipedia. Either the devs are going to have to wip together something clever, which they are supposedly working on--a block the disables only anons and not established users--or AOL is going to have to get off their lazy asses and do something about this guy to fix the problem. Not much that administrators can really do here. AmiDaniel (talk) 05:00, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh whoops, he linked to a disambig page. Please see Denial-of-service attack — that should explain it fully. --Cyde↔Weys 05:01, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

- Unblocked; pleasure to see you again. JRM · Talk 19:06, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- The block was almost immediately reinstated, this time with a saner expiry time of 15 minutes. There's so much vandalism coming from behind those proxies that administrators can't contain their enthusiasm, I'm afraid. JRM · Talk 19:27, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- And now it's back up to 3 hours. Until AOL cleans up their act, this is probably going to remain a hopeless situation. Half the admins are playing whack-the-AOL-vandal while the other half are playing block-the-AOL-range. My thoroughly researched advice? Petition Congress to declare AOL illegal and get an Internet service provider who cares. JRM · Talk 19:42, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

7 -- yes 7 days aol range block

- Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by Malo for the following reason (see our blocking policy): aol range block Your IP address is 207.200.116.138.
- I've been notified that User:AmiDaniel has been using me as an example of an AOL user whose problems are often quickly solved. I respectfully disagree. Please note that my time editing has been significantly reduced in the last 10 days. I sign in and manage one or two edits, am blocked, move to the http bypass, edit once or twice and am blocked again. These blocks may be targeted at the one or two professional AOL/IP vandals active at the moment, and I am sympathetic, but that doesn't solve my problems or allow me and others like me to edit. AOL is not my choice of provider, but it is my employer's choice and it allows me to work from home and care for family responsibilities. But I doubt AOL will ever address this problem as it would require a redesign of their very profitable network. So, developers at Wiki are my best hope. I suspect signed in AOL users like myself could be sorted by the blocking mechanism. Please make solving this problem a priority, I implore you. A release please. WBardwin 06:11, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
A seven day block!!! i.e. 21 June 2006, Malo (Talk) blocked 207.200.116.0/24 (contribs) (expires 20:58, 28 June 2006) (aol range block) Come now -- Release please. WBardwin 06:21, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

- Apologies I didn't read things through properly. Unfortunately there has been a lot of vandalism from AOL which has caused various blocks as you know, a 7 days block seems fairly extreme so I don't want to remove it without being aware of if there was some sort of escalation which caused that. I'm also about to leave for work, so can't even do so and monitor the situation. I have posted on the administrators notice board [4], so hopefully another admin will pick up on it. Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment. --pgk(talk) 07:45, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks anyway, Pgk. Imanaged to use the "http sign in" to at least look over my watchlist. I understand the serious AOL problem at present, but I am addicted and would rather not have a forced vacation. So, I would appreciate a prompt release. WBardwin 07:55, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

The not-an-autoblock
editI tried unblocking the IP, then re-blocking it with the "block anonymous users only" box activated. That SHOULD leave you free and the troll still blocked. As long as you're on the same IP, that is, and we know all about that. It's too bad, this, I'm sorry. :-( Bishonen | talk 10:45, 9 August 2006 (UTC).

- Nope, it turns out to be impossible. Apparently I can block, but not unblock, a whole range. :-( Well, please try to edit, I have unblocked your latest known IP, and re-blocked Bobby Boulders for anon user autoblocks only. - It's already expired. Next time please use the new {{unblock-auto}} template as instructed when you see the block page since it's just a copy/paste job from MediaWiki:Blockedtext now. It'll make things quicker for the both of us. PS: Please place your latest requests either at the top or bottom of your talk page. You can also delete all these old requests from your talk page since they're just wasting space...unless you're proud of showing off how much crap you have to put up with AOL = P -- Netsnipe ► 21:13, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your attention. I archive all the autoblock stuff regularly -- see AOL archive above. As for your instructions about the template, I am no programmer and, as I live with one, don't want to be a programmer. And I avoid templates whenever possible on general principle. So............huh???? Instructions in non-programmer language please or a simple pointer to the template you want me to copy would be very helpful. WBardwin 23:21, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

New Autoblock Procedure
editI hope this makes things easier for you: Clearing an autoblock
Due to the nature of the block applied, we need additional information before we can decide whether to unblock you. It is very likely that you are not personally blocked. If you are prevented from editing, it may be because you are autoblocked or blocked because of your IP address. Without further details, there is nothing further we can do to review or lift your block. Please follow these instructions:
- If you have a Wikipedia account, please ensure that you are logged in.
- Your account name will be visible in the top right of this page if you are.
- If it isn't, try bypassing your web browser's cache.
- Try to edit the Sandbox.
- If you are able to edit the sandbox, you are not blocked from editing. Either the autoblock on your IP address has already expired, or you weren't blocked in the first place. Either way, you can resume editing.
- If you are still blocked, follow the directions below:
- Copy the {{unblock-auto|...}} code generated for you under the "Unblock request" section.
- Paste the code at the bottom of your user talk page, and click save.
- If you cannot edit your own talk page, use the Unblock Ticket Request System to make your request.
Cheers. -- Netsnipe ► 06:03, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, thanks for the effort but you didn't really answer the question. I understand all the perameters of the AOL autoblock issue. I've been working with administrators for months, from a users point of view, on ways we can solve the problem. I avoid templates whenever possible on general principle as I think they are ugly and actually block rather than promote communication. For example, the prepacked message above frankly says exactly nothing. But that leads, of course, to the problem of knowing how to use them when they are required. I don't follow instructions willingly or with good grace.
- But you said I was now using the wrong template. I'm sorry about that, as it has been extremely useful. Why is it wrong? and where is the right one? Is it the phrase listed in our conversation above? I'll paste that into my autoblock section - and give it a try. Or if necessary, I'll go back to my old habit of screaming for help from familiar admins. Or, if everyone has given up on the AOL user problems altogether, I'll edit when I can and go from there. Best wishes. WBardwin 06:32, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
The old way isn't wrong, just clumsy. MediaWiki:Blockedtext now generates the right code for you, so you don't have to copy and paste from your talk page. You can copy and paste straight from the block screen. {{unblock-auto}} lets us unblock you in seconds instead of a minute or two (per case) without us ever having to reach for the keyboard. So when you get blocked next time, just copy and paste what you see from your block message. See here for an example of it in action. Cheers -- Netsnipe ► 06:48, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Today's autoblock
editBlocked again while fighting vandalism on my watchlist. Sigh! Information below. "Good" template activated. WBardwin 17:19, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Done. You incorrectly used unblock-auto again. The block page has probably changed a lot since you last actually read it. Please just do what it tells you to do next time. -- Netsnipe ► 17:44, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Blocked once again. Not an autoblock this time. Since the "good" template is not acceptable, I will use the "bad" template or no template at all. Why -- since I have never done anything to warrant a block -- should I have to go through all these adminstrative hassles, all these rules and procedures, to edit? This is a programming problem. Release please. WBardwin 00:23, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing.
You were blocked by $1 for the following reason (see our blocking policy): $2 Your IP address is $3.
- I copied everything in the "block" box. No other IP information was given. However, it seems to have "expired" as I have been able to edit for the last few minutes. WBardwin 01:02, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
OK. Let me explain again. When you are autoblocked next time, you will see a block screen which is identical to MediaWiki:Blockedtext, but with all the $1, $2, and $3 variables all filled out for your case. So instead of {{unblock-auto|$3|$2}} as it says now, it will say something like {{unblock-auto|192.168.0.1|Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by some_other_user...}}. I want you to copy and paste that line it generates for you into your talk page. Understand? -- Netsnipe ► 14:35, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
