Natrix maura, commonly known as the viperine snake or the viperine water snake, is a semiaquatic natricine snake in the family Colubridae. It is found in southwestern Europe and northwestern Africa, where it inhabits terrestrial and aquatic habitats, including forests, shrublands and inland wetlands. It feeds on fish, frogs and other aquatic animals and spends much of its time hunting in water. Grey, brown or reddish in colour, it has a distinctive black zigzag pattern resembling that of an adder, although it is not a true viper. Adults can reach up to 85 cm (33 in) in length. It is classified as a least-concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, although its numbers are declining.
