Alex McClelland

Member of Canadian Treatment Action Council^[1] Alex is an advocate, educator, community organizer and researcher. Since his HIV-positive diagnosis in 1998, Alex has been involved in many Canadian and international civil society organizations working toward addressing the social drivers of the HIV epidemic including stigma, discrimination, poverty, and other forms of inequality. Alex strongly believes in the principle of ‘nothing about us, without us’, which calls for the rights of peoples to be involved in decision-making that affects their lives.

Alex started his work as a peer support worker with Positive Youth Outreach, providing support and information on health and wellness, HIV treatment, sexual and reproductive health and rights to young people living with HIV in Toronto, Canada. Alex has since worked for the XVI International AIDS Conference, UNAIDS, UNESCO, the Global Network of People living with HIV (GNP+), the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, the World AIDS Campaign, International Civil Society Support, and International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). Alex has been awarded the 2008 Ontario AIDS Network Person Living with HIV Leadership award, 2010 University without Walls Fellowship and the 2010 Canadian Institutes of Health Research Masters Award in HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research.

Alex is currently completing his Masters in Environmental Studies at York University
