I am the outgoing director of international harm reduction at the Open Society Foundations, where I worked for 17 years supporting programs that protect the health and rights of people who use drugs in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Eastern Europe. I am an expert on the intersection of HIV and drug policy, and have published widely in peer reviewed journals and popular media, including The Lancet,[1][2][3][4] The Journal of the American Medical Association[5], the International Journal of Drug Policy[6][7], the International Herald Tribune[8], the Journal of Medical Ethics[9], the Nation[10], and the New York Times Book Review[11]. I am the former director of communications at Gay Men's Health Crisis, the oldest and largest AIDS organization in the United States, and the author of Men Like Us: The GMHC Complete Guide to Gay Men's Mental, Physical and Emotional Well-Being (Ballantine Books)[12].
I am working on Wikipedia articles related to my areas of expertise (HIV activism and activist groups like Gran Fury and substance use treatment and programming, including articles on naltrexone, buprenorphine methadone, harm reduction, low-threshold treatment programs, methadone maintenance treatment, and prescription drug monitoring programs, as well as pages on individuals who have played a prominent role in public debate on drugs and drugs programming in the US, including Ethan Nadelmann, Richard Elovich and others. Several of these are ongoing efforts.
