This is an essay on the portal guidelines. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. This is a collection on my thoughts regarding Wikipedia:Portals. For context, I have strong eventualist leanings.
- Portals do not need maintainers. The idea that we should require someone to be in charge of a page for it to exist is antithetical to WP:OWN.
- Evaluating whether a topic is "broad" is similar to evaluating whether a subject is notable. Breadth is not temporary and it is based upon the existence of suitable articles not whether they have been incorporated into the portal yet.
