David Colin Savoy Jr. is a musician from Pearl City, Hawaii, best known for his work under the moniker xxCrunchY. He has released three studio albums under the xxCrunchY moniker from the span of late 2016 and August of 2020.
Savoy's first album, Jedinstveno, had elements of jazz, techno, and other elements. His second album, Inspyre, had more elements of genres such as vaporwave, speedcore, lo-fi and hip-hop. His third and last album, Visit Mi Later, is consisted primarily of electronic.
Savoy is currently making experimental hip-hop instrumentals for his Filth Lovers project, as well as rapping under another moniker, Sicklid and is planning a rock album for his Miller Grove project. He has said that the Filth Lovers project takes heavy influences from Death Grips and Aphex Twin, as well as other experimental hip-hop artists such as JPEGMAFIA.
History
editEarly days (2016-2017)
editSavoy learned how to make music on Soundtrap.com and was taught by his primary school librarian. While making music, he had no musical knowledge. His early songs used pirated instrumentals and unclear rap parts. His first song, Less Than Three, used programmed synths, programmed guitars and drum loops. He uploaded the song on YouTube but never released it for streaming. The song is very short and has no words. His second song, Triggering a Storm, used synth loops and drum loops, but also had no lyrics. He released this song on April 27, 2017.
He made his third and fourth song, Too United! and Dubstepper, onto YouTube. Too United is still public, but he deleted the video for Dubstepper and does not have the song anymore.
Jedinstveno and Inspyre (2017-2018)
editSavoy's first album Jedinstveno was self released on May 12, 2017. His songs Triggering a Storm and Too United! were added to the album along with eight other songs.
Savoy stated that "at first I hated it, but now that I listen to it, I've grown to like it more than my sophomore project. I would say that this album isn't critically disliked or critically acclaimed, because no one ever heard the album." Jedinstveno currently sits at a 3.00 on Rate Your Music with one rating.
After the release of Jedinstveno, Savoy went straight to work on his second album, Inspyre. This album was originally stated to have a rock song as its intro, but was quickly scrapped. Inspyre contains many genres, with savoy stating that he "doesn't know all the genres in the album". Savoy views this album as an album that shouldn't have been released. He thinks of this album as "Lebron James and Kobe Bryant on a team with Joakim Noah and Luol Deng". The album sits at a 1.00 rating on Rate Your Music with one rating and review, with the rating and review being made by Savoy himself. After this release, Savoy took a year-long break from creating music.
Return to music, Four Ambient Songs and Visit Mi Later (2019-2020)
editFrom Father's Day to August, Savoy had secretly been working on a song titled "First Lightning". This album was to be added to his album, Number 6457, but the song was scrapped from the album.
After the month of August, Savoy had been working on his third and possibly final album under the xxCrunchY moniker, and would have 10 tracks. Currently, however, the album has been dropped to 8 tracks. Savoy stated that "no song sounds at all like the other".
While still working on "Number 6457", xxCrunchY created an EP in five hours titled "Four Ambient Songs". This was to promote his upcoming album. On the same day, Savoy dropped a single titled "Visit Mi Later", and in April, he would release a single titled "Argentum". While working on the mixing of Number 6457, Savoy made a last minute decision to rename the upcoming album Visit Mi Later. The album would be released on August 21, 2020. This album consisted of progressive electronic, as well as some IDM elements.
During the stages of recording Visit Mi Later around February, Savoy was working on a plunderphonics project that did not have a name. One song, however, named "X-Factor", was in the works while in the beginning of recording Visit Mi Later. This early recording, however, was stripped back into one section of the song. The early recording contained a guitar track from Silverchair's "Learn to Hate", a drum track from Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun, and a bass track from both Radiohead's "The National Anthem" and Embryo's "Klondyke-Netti".
This project, later named "Music to Coffin Drop To" (stylized in all caps, as well as all of the tracks) on the release day, was recorded during February-May 2020 and was released on Soundcloud. Savoy stated the reason for this release was because "it was just sitting there on my school laptop, so I just released it." He also stated that "he wanted this to be a full ten track mixtape."
Savoy added "First Lightning", along with three other tracks on an EP titled "To Inhalant Ivy (Visit Mi Later rejects)", and uploaded it to Bandcamp. He released a single off of the EP, titled "To Inhalant Ivy (Thy Valiant Ion)", on the same day.
The end of xxCrunchY, Phantom Fire Records and Unfold / Waste (2021-present)
editSavoy disbanded the xxCrunchY project, stating that "he does not want to make and release any more electronic music anymore". He, however, states that there's a demo song in his library that he may release soon.
Savoy founded the netlabel Phantom Fire Records in March of 2021, originally calling it Melted Shoe Records. The first release from Phantom Fire Records is a single from Savoy under his real name, titled "Unfold / Waste", which is an indie rock single with influences from bands such as Nirvana and [[Dinosaur Jr.] Savoy states that this record label will mostly be tracks from himself and future groups, but is not backing down from others signing to the label.
Music Projects
editSavoy has his solo music project, along with other projects such as his rock project Miller Grove which formed in November of 2020 with a couple demos, and his rap project Filth Lovers, with an instrumental plunderphonics EP titled "Music to Coffin Drop to" (stylized as MUSIC TO COFFIN DROP TO). He formed Filth Lovers in October of 2020. Savoy also released an indie rock single, titled "Unfold / Waste", in March of 2021, and recorded it in February of that same year.
