Lidice Nuñez (Lídice Núñez López 1969, Habana, Cuba) is a dancer, educator and choreographer recognized as an icon of contemporary dance in Cuba.[1]
She developed a wide repertoire as a solo dancer and choreographer at the Contemporary Dance Company of Cuba. She later moved to Mexico City and currently she develops her artistic and teaching activity in Houston, Texas.[2]
Artistic Career
editShe studied at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Cuba (ENA) where she graduated with honors and is a graduate of the Instituto Superior de Arte in Cuba. She recently graduated from the ENA and reached the highest category that a dancer can aspire to by becoming the first dancer of the company. From that moment on, her career skyrocketed and she was highly sought after by the most important choreographers during those years. Her repertoire includes the most significant creations by Victor Cuéllar, Marianela Boán, Narciso Medina and since the 1990s she has also simultaneously made creations of her own. In her performances she completely dominated the stage and you couldn't stop looking at her for a second.[3]
Her technical training was at the National School of Contemporary Dance, and her basic technique is modern Cuban dance. Her training has a lot of classical ballet and workshops of other techniques such as Limón, Graham, among others. In her work neither abstractionism nor narrativity works concretely.
She also studied choreography in Paris under the auspices of the Brownstone Foundation and obtained the Ulpan Emshej Certification Diploma from the Hebrew University.
Since 2014 she is a member of the International Dance Council CID UNESCO.
Lídice Nuñez has performed and created for several International Dance and Ballet Festivals in Havana and on tours around the world. She has won several awards at national festivals and competitions. She has taught courses and workshops in various countries. Her works have been presented in Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Suriname, Saint Kis and Nevis, United States, Canada, Spain, France, Russia, Italy, Greece, Finland, South Korea and Japan.
In 2017 she was a guest choreographer for the Mexico City Ballet Company where she was nominated for the National Auditorium Lunas Awards.
