The American Communist Party (ACP) is a Marxist–Leninist political party in the United States. It spilt from the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) in the aftermath of the party's 32nd National Convention.
Three local cells of the Party of Communists USA (PCUSA), a minor Marxist party, also signed the party's founding declaration. The party describes itself as a "reconstitution of the Communist Party USA."[1]
Ideology
editThe ACP describes itself as being Marxist–Leninist. The party accuses the leadership of the CPUSA of revisionism and claims to uphold the ideas of Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong.
The party's Plenary Council members range from traditional Marxists and CPUSA members[2] like Carlos Garrido[1] and his colleagues at the Midwestern Marx Institute[3][1] to promoters of "MAGA communism" like Jackson Hinkle,[1] who publicly announced the formation of the ACP on his Twitter in a now-pinned Tweet,[4] and Haz Al-Din.
History
editFrom June 7–9 2024, the CPUSA, the largest communist party in the United States, held its 32nd National Convention. One of the resolutions voted on at the convention was Resolution 5, which would endorse the Democratic Party on behalf of a "broad front to defeat Trump."[5]
Critics of the resolution within the party argued that the resolution amounted to a capitulation to the Democratic Party, additionally claiming that they were not allowed to present their case at the convention, which would amount to a violation of the democratic centralism principle and the party's constitution.[6]
A faction of dissenters split to form the ACP on July 21, 2024. The new party claims that 29 regional clubs of the CPUSA have joined them, although the CPUSA denies this.[citation needed]
Controversy
editA Vice article described a faction of the ACP, "MAGA communism", as taking advantage of leftist values to make the alt-right more appealing, similar to a strategy described in Blackshirts and Reds by political scientist Michael Parenti.[7] MAGA communism has additionally been characterized as lacking ideological consistency and focusing its appeal to people disillusioned with modern American liberalism.[citation needed]
