This is, at most, an implementation detail in Solaris and NetBSD (the other BSDs appear to have inherited it from the original BSD and then dropped it later). It is definitely not a thing for Unix in general. Nobody seems to have ever documented what it does.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
