Pronunciation of "forest"

edit

English has reduced vowels, but when pronouncing a word carefully, as the person in the recording might be doing, people tend to give orthographic vowels their full values. /fɒrɛst/ is such a spelling pronunciation. Normally it's /fɒrɨst/, with /ɨ/ being the reduced version of /ɪ, ɛ, æ/ that the OED just transcribes "ɪ". The question is whether there's really a /ɛ/ in the word, or if people just think there is because that's how it's spelled. — kwami (talk) 17:35, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
