ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Faith Ringgold 1999, Anthony Barboza Getty.jpeg
Thank you for uploading File:Faith Ringgold 1999, Anthony Barboza Getty.jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Josh Milburn (talk) 15:59, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @J Milburn I'm not going to fight this rationale dispute because it's not worth the time, but to be clear, this photograph is in use because the free photographs available on Commons are incredibly low quality. Look at this image and tell me it's high enough quality for use on Wikipedia. There are no other (quality) free equivalents available online and the subject is deceased, so I uploaded a non-free image to improve the article in lieu of a high-quality free image, which to me seems like one of the basic reasons behind using non-free images of people. I welcome your reasoning for why this deletion will somehow improve the project, but if you really think the alternative image is good enough for use, feel free to switch them out. 19h00s (talk) 16:30, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @19h00s: Thanks for the note. We certainly could back-and-forth about whether the free images available are of such low quality that non-free content is justifiable. But you've only addressed the 'and another thing' part of my objection to the image. My primary objection is that, as far as I can see, it's a textbook violation of WP:NFCC#2, as explained at WP:NFCI. Josh Milburn (talk) 17:31, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- To be clear: I have already switched the image out. I don't think that the new lead image is a likely candidate for featured picture status, but is it better than nothing? Absolutely (in my view, at least). And is it better to use free content when we have it? I believe so, and that's what the relevant policies/guidelines say.
