editHello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions so far. I hope you like the place and decide to stay.

You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but if you wish to acquire additional privileges, you can simply create a named account. It's free, requires no personal information, and lets you:
- Create new pages and rename pages
- Edit semi-protected pages
- Upload images
- Have your own watchlist, which shows when articles you are interested in have changed
Note that in order for the first three features to be available, you must have had an account for a certain number of days and made a certain number of edits.
If you edit without using a named account, your IP address (24.7.159.1) is used to identify you instead.
I hope that you, as a Wikipedian, decide to continue contributing to our project: an encyclopedia of human knowledge that anyone can edit. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, or you can to ask for help on your talk page, and a volunteer should respond shortly. We also have an intuitive guide on editing if you're interested. By the way, please make sure to sign and date your talk page comments with four tildes (~~~~).
Happy editing! Mathglot (talk) 07:48, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Capitalism
editIn your edit to Capitalism, you made a change to sourced text. In your edit summary, you said:
I could not find the original point in the article cited (“by the end of the 18th century [capitalism] became the dominant global economic system”) so I replaced it with text making a slightly more nuanced point, copied from the same cited source.
Can you please tell me exactly where you got this from in the cited source, i.e., the page number? This is a 416-page volume, and page numbers are required for verifiability. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 07:55, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
I prefer to keep discussions in one place, so moving your reply here. Mathglot (talk) 01:56, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- While the reference is to a book, the link is to the galley proof of a single chapter from the book. On the assumption that the chapter was the relevant portion of the book, I attempted to verify the original sentence in the article and could not. I modified the article text so that it now accords with the linked chapter. After reading your comment, I also added a page number (roman numerals within the galley proof), but it is possible that I didn't put it in the right place, since I'm not a qualified Wikipedia editor. Being unfamiliar with the Wikipedia format is also the reason I didn't modify the citation so that it cites a book chapter rather than the whole book. If you know how to do that, I think it would be a good idea. Another option would be to remove the link (if in fact the chapter isn't the relevant portion). However, in that last case, it might be best to verify the original text again, this time against the entire book. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.159.1 (talk) 01:37, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, 24.7.159.1 and thanks for your reply. ::I did not see the link you added at first, because it was added here with an IPV6 address that didn't match yours. But that does, indeed, address the problem, so thank you very much for that. And yes, you put it in the right place. Don't worry about being 'qualified' or not, you're doing fine, and it takes some time to get used to all the ins and outs of this place.
- Procedurally speaking, your explanation above makes some sense. The edit summary field is way too short to fully explain something like that, however. In a case like that, it's probably better to write an edit summary with a brief explanation about the link, and end it with, "See Talk" and at the same time add a new section to the Talk page, explaining what you explained above. That might avoid a revert and launch a discussion, instead. The situation was further confused, by the fact that the two edits in that area appeared to come from two different users, you, and 2001:5b0:2656:188:283a:6732:ecd6:82a0 (talk · contribs) but I see now that you are one and the same.
- I hope you decide to stick around, I feel that you could be a valuable addition to Wikipedia. Please consider registering an account. There are numerous advantages, not least of which is avoiding the confusion in the minds of other editors resulting from what seem to be edits by different individuals, getting all your messages in one place, and various other reasons. Please see Wikipedia:Why register?. Also, there's a certain protocol on Talk pages like this one, to keep discussions orderly by using indentation and signatures. Please have a look at WP:THREAD and WP:FOURTILDES. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Mathglot (talk) 02:27, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's IP address. Many IP addresses change periodically, and are often shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users. Registering also hides your IP address. |
