It's standard practice to use the full name of a club at first mention, until context is established, and after that it's fine to use the abbreviated version. The full name of A.F.C. Bournemouth includes the AFC. It distinguishes the club from the other Bournemouth-based club, Bournemouth F.C. We're writing for the general reader, not for football experts, so we shouldn't deliberately obscure the name of the the club we're writing about. Thank you for listening.
