Silent Hill 2
editHi, you reverted my edits on Silent Hill 2 and I'm not sure why, because there was no edit summary included. Can we talk about this? I very clearly explained my reasoning in my edit summaries. Best, Rapunzel-bellflower (talk) 23:22, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for explaining! Please don't worry about it; it's water under the bridge. That makes a lot more sense to me. I'm going to break this up a bit because there's a lot going on in that last paragraph of the lead, and I want to make sure it's the best it can be. So, the wording I was trying to get away from is "the greatest horror video game ever," which to me sounds like SH2 (and only SH2) is the greatest horror video game ever. I do have a bias for the SH titles, true, especially SH2 which I adore, but Resident Evil 4, for example, often appears in the same best of horror lists as SH2. I'd definitely be ok with something along the lines of "In retrospectives, SH2 often ranks as one of the greatest video games as well as one of the best horror games." Which is true, it does.
- The bit about SH2's initial critical response. My aim was to cover the critical response as a whole, in that generally, critics really did like it and thought it was a nice follow up to SH. I'm sort of questioning how helpful it is to basically list out the individual elements that critics liked, but again, I'd be open to something like, "Critics generally felt that SH2 was a worthy successor to SH, with X, Y, and Z highlighted as strengths" (sorry, I genuinely do not remember off the top of my head what they liked; it was ages since I wrote the reception section.)
- When I was thinking of narrative, I was using it in the super obnoxious academic sense, where narrative basically covers things like symbolism, metaphors, storyline, design... which is a bit sticky if we are talking about video games. (What even is video game narrative?) Basically I was ambitiously trying to sum up everything critics loved about SH2, which was certainly not meant to be reductive. Now, I'd have to go through the best of lists again, because I don't fully remember all the details, but I imagine it would boil down to something like "In retrospectives, SH2 often ranks as one of the greatest video games as well as one of the best horror games particularly for its narrative, use of literary devices, atmosphere, and game design."
- Again, thank you for clarifying your reasoning. I so do appreciate it. Best, Rapunzel-bellflower (talk) 01:17, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
