Hi, Mike! I don't think he was even being particularly humorous with "sci-fi" – I have read (possibly in something by Isaac Asimov) that he seriously wanted it to be adopted, and was upset that its application was narrowed by other fen to refer to the rubbish. I wonder if he might have taken this personally, given that most of the professional films and other works he was connected to fell into the schlock category.
