Paolo Aldighieri

edit

Dear 99ernst!, The article is the current state is quite good, but it has a number of small problems. The first one, is that some of the references are classed under bare urls. What this means, is they are basic URL, without any reference formats. Taking this reference:

http://www.exibart.com/profilo/eventiV2.asp?idelemento=95904

When you look at that, it a string, with no information, it has no information. These must be converted into a WP references, using the Template:Cite web template. You don't need to use directly, because when you open the editor, their is a cite button, select cite web, and fill in the details. All the fields are important, so try and fill them in. The more the better, as pages move or deleted on the web, the more fields, means the info can be found better. Secondly, I notice your man has a number of books written, and their is references for them in WorldCat. The field I added, below references, links the articles to those entries. At the moment the article is short, there is duplicate articles on other WP's which can be used as sources of information, the lede is too short, the biography is too short. The article has barely any information about him. Where is the list of his works. His bio can needs to be stretched out. Why is there no links, for instance Pompidou Center in Paris links to Centre Georges Pompidou. Why is it not linked. scope_creep (talk) 17:24, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Paolo Aldighieri (sculptor)

edit

Hi, in response you your note on my talk page, I have looked at your draft article for Paolo Aldighieri (sculptor) in your sandbox. In my experience the most common problems with new articles, particular by new Wikipedia editors, are:

  • Notability - see Wikipedia:Notability (people), particularly the WP:ARTIST paragraph.
  • Sourcing - whether sufficient sources are cited and whether these are reliable and independent. This is linked with notability, if you can cite multiple articles in mainstream newspapers and magazines then you have probably established notability.
  • Conflict of interest

I have found the article you created on this sculptor on French Wikipedia: fr:Paolo Aldighieri (sculpteur). If the English article includes a translation of this then you should tag the English article with {{translated page}} on its talk page, identifying the name and revision number of the source article. This applies even if you wrote the original text.

I have also found deletion discussions in Italian Wikipedia for articles on this sculptor

My knowledge of Italian is weak, but it is clear that these all resulted in deletion decisions. A deletion decision on another Wikipedia is not fatal to an article's chance of survival. The earlier decision may have been ill-informed, the subject's notability may have increased and the notability conventions and guidelines of different Wikipedia language editions may be different.

The guidelines at WP:ARTIST (only one of which need be met) are:

1. The person is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by peers or successors.

2. The person is known for originating a significant new concept, theory, or technique.

3.The person has created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work or collective body of work. In addition, such work must have been the primary subject of an independent and notable work (for example, a book, film, or television series, but usually not a single episode of a television series) or of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews.

4 The person's work (or works) either (a) has become a significant monument, (b) has been a substantial part of a significant exhibition, (c) has won significant critical attention, or (d) is represented within the permanent collections of several notable galleries or museums.

Paolo Aldighieri does not appear to qualify under 1, 2 or 3. The most likely test to pass appear to be 4b, regarding his exhibiting at the Venice Biennale and the Pompidou Centre. The large number of exhibitors at the Venice Biennale exhibitions suggests that none of them is likely to have been "a substantial part" of an exhibition. The Pompidou Centre exhibition might be more noteworthy, but I would want to see more exhibitions of this prominence.

You cite these references

  • Paolo Levi, "Catalogo degli scultori italiani", ed. Giorgio Mondadori, Milano, 2008, ISBN 9788860521811
This is a large dictionary of contemporary Italian sculptors (358 pages [1]). It should be a good source for biographical details, but Aldighieri's listing in it does not establish sufficient notability.
  • Paolo Aldighieri, "Extradimensionismo", International Publishing, Venezia, 2007
I found this here. This is a short book by Aldighieri. It is worth mentioning, but does not establish notability.
This is a dead link. This link lists a 2007 exhibition by Aldighieri.
This is a dead link. I could not find anything relevant at http://www.archiviodistatomilano.beniculturali.it/
This establishes an exhibition at (or in connection with) the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010.
This establishes an exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in 2012.

You do not appear to have a source for the exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2011. I would like to see more citations of reliable independent sources, including reviews in mainstream newspapers and art journals.

I suspect that you may have a conflict of interest. your contributions to the Italian, French and English Wikipedias are mostly related to this sculptor (and a few on his namesake the cartoonist it:Paolo Aldighieri). You should not contribute to an article on yourself, or to one on a close friend or family member, or on someone you have a business relationship with (e.g. if you work for an art gallery that represents the artist), see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide.

Regarding your article itself, it is thin on content and reads like a exhibition listing. Some of the phrasing reads like a translation, for example "Driven by his passion for the mineral world". "Apotropaic" is an obscure word in English and may be a dictionary translation of a less obscure French or Italian word.

In summary, my main concern with your proposed article is with Paolo Aldighieri's notability. He is more notable that numerous other artists with Wikipedia articles, but this is not the test that should be applied. Additional high-quality references should be found, although the lack of good references probably reflects the lack of coverage elsewhere.

This article is a marginal case, but I suspect it might not pass a deletion review.

I am going to nominate your picture of Aldighieri on Commons for deletion: c:File:Paolo Aldighieri - "Pietre cosmiche" (Magazzini del Sale, 2010).JPG, because it appears to be a copyright violation of the sculpture. There is no Freedom of Panorama in Italy, see c:Commons:Freedom of panorama#Italy. This means that you cannot post images of artworks in Italy without the artist's permission, unless they died many years ago. Do you have another picture of Aldighieri without the sculpture? You could crop the existing picture, but Aldighieri's face would then be out of focus. Verbcatcher (talk) 20:22, 26 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
