This article does a good job of providing a cultural and mythological background to the term hijras. However, I think it blurs the lines between ‘transgender’ people, third gendered people (which was not defined) and hijras; they’re not the same. I think it would be more effective to define each term to illustrate the differences between them, and the different societal conditions and personal choices surrounding each of their lives. I also felt that the stories from Hindu mythology need to be more explicitly connected with contemporary context and treatment of hijras in Indian society. The article also mentions eunuch, after having referred to them as ‘third-sex’ people and ‘transgender’ people; once again, these are not all referring to the same gender identity. Clear definition and differentiation is needed, in my opinion. Finally, all the facts and stories need to be more effective cited at the end of each sentence that is coming from another source.
