Resident Evil

If you are interested in what I have resource wise, let me know, as I have a whole wall of back issues of GamePro, Electronic Gaming Monthly, the three different PlayStation magazines, GameInformers, published strategy guides, etc. I know some insist we are not a "guide"; however, several of the guides that I have non-guide detailed information. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 23:21, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Is this in response to my recent editing? If so, feel free to contribute in any way you see fit. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 23:25, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Actually, that is coincidental. I think all of us who frequent the character discussions need to colloborate more on some of these projects and my hope is that rather than all of us going back in forth in AfDs, we first focus on improving the most important articles and then deal with the debateable ones (of course any that are hoaxs or copy vios can be deleted with no controversy). Anyway, what I was getting at with regards to the whole "not a guide" thing is something like Resident Evil 5 The Complete Official Guide: Collectors Edition. Sure it is a licensed publication, but is unquestionably a reliable source. Most importantly for our purposes, beyond the walkthrough, it devotes a huge section to "Behind the Scenes" from page 192 on. The section includes multi-page subsections on "Character Concepts" with various development information (at least a dozen full sized paragraphs) from modelers and production directors. It has additional subsections on "Motion Capture & Animation". So, for someone like Sheva, we have Yasuhiro Anpo, Production Designer, reveal "The designing of a female character is a killer assignment. We had to change and modify Sheva considerably to combine two qualities, feminine attraction and the strength of a fighting woman." Or we have Yosuke Yamagata, Modeler, say, "Sheva is a character who symbolizes one of the themes of RE5 - the 'bond of patnership'...." (he goes on for THREE paragraphs discussing her development). Now, of course, not all strategy guides have this stuff, but several of the ones I own do and I think we can reasonably agree that for something like the development sections they are reliable. Anyway, if you would like me to email you a draft of the list of published top ten lists from GameInformer and Electronic Gaming Monthly, let me know. My overall opinion is that any ones for which we can come up with both development sections and reception sections can exist as stand alone articles; those that are not hoaxes can be merged and/or redirected; and those that are hoaxes and/or have no redirect location can be deleted. As such, I am planning on only focusing in AfDs on those for which a realistic prospect of stand alone exists. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 23:39, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Might I suggest that you work on Chris first, and I'll work on Ada [and when I'm done with Ada, I'll work on Sheva]? - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 00:17, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
In the "Characters" section of the manual (produced by George Hu and Offbase Productions) for Resident Evil 5 (San Mateo: Capcom Entertainment, Inc., 2009) provides the following bios:
Chris Redfield on page 6: "Chris's knowledge, instinct, and attack power are unparalled within the BSAA, and years of experience has given him the ability to wield a variety of weapons. Since Umbrella's downfall, he has fought several biological threats throughout the world, but with the hard fought victories has also come devastating tragedies." Could be helpful for User:New Age Retro Hippie/Chris Redfield.
Sheva Alomar on page 7: "A BSAA agent and an African native, Sheva joins as Chris's partner in his latest mission. Her skills in battle are formidable, and her agility is unparalleled. She is driven by her dark past to fight against the bioterrorism ravaging her homeland." Could be helpful for User:New Age Retro Hippie/Sheva Alomar.
That might be it for now as my back is really starting to hurt and I feel like shooting something; so I will probably play some Ghost Squad! Best, --A NobodyMy talk 00:35, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Okay, done playing Ghost Squad and eating a cheeseburger (nothing like saying "no onions" and still getting onions...which I hate!) and French fries. Anyway, “Retronauts Presents WTFiction!? Deciphering silly stories” by Jeremy Parish is a five part series and Electronic Gaming Monthly 224 (January 2008) covers No. 2: Resident Evil by listing essentially the top 12 elements of the game across a couple of pages (100-101) of the magazine. Here are the numbered entries (I will only provide some parts of only some of the summaries, i.e. those you seem interested in with your userfied articles, so as not to just copy the whole thing for copyright purposes; also absent from the list below are all the lines that the article features indicating their relationships to each other):
  • 1. Umbrella Corp.
  • 2. Ozwell Spencer, Edward Ashford, James Marcus
  • 3. Viruses
  • 4. Raccoon City
  • 5. Albert Wesker: "'Why won't you die?1' Wesker seems to get killed a lot, but he always seems to pop up again, just looking slightly less human. An Umbrella employee masquerading as a STARS member, Wesker tried betraying his comrades only to be killed by his own creation, the Tyrant. He later switched allegiance, hoping to steal Umbrella's secrets for a rival corporation - and even later hoped to cultivate Las Plagas." See page 100. Could be helpful for User:New Age Retro Hippie/Albert Wesker.
  • 6. RPD/STARS
  • 7. Ada Wong: "A mysterious woman who helped Leon Kennedy for a while...then turned coats and helped Wesker instead. But actually, she was double-crossing Wesker and his mysterious shadow organization in the service of a totally different shadow organization. Uh, OK." See page 101. Could be helpful for User:New Age Retro Hippie/Ada Wong.
  • 8. Los Illuminados
  • 9. Leon Kennedy: "After surviving a zombie-infested Raccoon City and putting a stop to a sex-starved mutated version of Umbrella's top viral researcher, former STARS agent Leon Kennedy went to work for the American government. There he did STARS-like duties with the added benefit of having the president's daughter totally crush on him as he put an end to Los Illuminados." See page 101. Could be helpful for User:New Age Retro Hippie/Leon S. Kennedy.
  • 10. Jill Valentine
  • 11. Claire Redfield: "Chris' sister Claire isn't a cop, but she's determined to stop zombie crime anyway. She's very spunky, which is demonstrated by her ability to fight the undead with a sexy bare midrift. She went searching for her brother - but ultimately, he had to rescue her when she ran afoul of Umbrella. Oops!" See page 101. Could be helpful for User:New Age Retro Hippie/Claire Redfield.
  • 12. Chris Redfield: "RPD's top STARS field agent, Chris put a stop to the nefarious goings-on in Umbella's mansion, then went underground to research the company's evil-doings. This prompted his sister to go searching for him, which in turn led to him searching for her once she became trapped in a remote Umbrella facility. He'll also be coming out of cover more prominently in RE5." See page 101. Could be helpful for User:New Age Retro Hippie/Chris Redfield.
Another list entry of relevance is:
  • 9. "Garrador (Resident Evil 4) Of all the tense battles in the game, there was nothing quite like the sense of being hunted in your first encounter with the vicious Garrador. These berserk and sound-sensitive gladiators could easily tear you apart with their metal claws, so you needed to drive them into a frenzy by ringing nearby bells. We still remember the terror in that brief moment when we realized the Garrador had pinpointed our location and was ready to strike." See “the top 10 boss fights,” GameInformer 181 (May 2008): 20.
And another...
  • 4. "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PS1): Nemesis Nemesis is hardly a sparkling conversationalist, and he has the world’s worst case of smoker’s gums, but he can break through walls like they’re made of kitten farts before punching your head off. And really, that’s all he needs to do. Keep it simple, stupid." See “EGM’s Top Ten Badass Undead: Thriller night” by Scott Sharkey, Electronic Gaming Monthly 233 (October 2008): 105.

I'm going to split Chris, as he definitely has enough for a start. Could you help find some creation info for Ada? I've found very little so far. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 05:11, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good; I'm am looking for interviews on Google now. By the way, you may or may not find the following funny/cute: [1] and [2]. My dad and I got a laugh out of both and after trying to beat Darkside Chronicles and Umbrella Chronicles (the latter is too hard for me...), there was something just pleasant/nostalgic, whatever, about the Numa one in particular. [3] → You may wish to be more observant next time so you're not wasting an edit there. The user was blocked right before your welcoming message ([4]) :) –MuZemike 02:03, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

I welcomed the account after noticing what seemed like legitimate anti-vandalism work a la this edit for example. It appears the account was blocked litterally 1 minute before my welcome. I had not noticed whatever the offending edits were, just the ones such as above that looked legitimate. I was probably adding the template just as the block was occuring. I appreciate the heads up though. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 02:06, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

RE: RE

Hello! I notice on your userpage that you list Nemesis (Resident Evil) as an A-article you contributed to. Please note my workspace at User_talk:A_Nobody/List_of_decisive_battles#Resident_Evil_series. Anyway, would you like to collaborate on getting the most significant characters from the series to DYK class? The two most "notable" female characters would have to be Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield (they appear as playable characters in multiple games, appear in the movie versions, and have multiple toys made of them and therefore we should be able to find sources on their appearances in the games, movies, and as toys) and probably Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield for the guys (the former appears in the animated movie and the latter as an action figure; both are main characters in multiple games). The others listed on my userfied page have potential, but I can accept them being in the character lists. Jilly, Claire, Leon, and Chris have the greatest likelihood of working as stand alone articles (I wouldn't be surprised if they don't appear in some top ten lists as well, which incidentally, while taking care of an ill family member, I have been going through back issues of Game Informer, Electronic Gaming Monthly, etc. to compile a master list of all of their top ten lists and if you are curious what I have discovered thus far, drop me an email; I figure no one can challenge the reliability of these particular magazines; I have been working with another on this as well as seen at User_talk:A_Nobody/Archive_25#Source_request).

For example, we have something like “the top 10 boss fights,” GameInformer 181 (May 2008): 20, which lists "9 Garrador (Resident Evil 4) Of all the tense battles in the game, there was nothing quite like the sense of being hunted in your first encounter with the vicious Garrador. These berserk and sound-sensitive gladiators could easily tear you apart with their metal claws, so you needed to drive them into a frenzy by ringing nearby bells. We still remember the terror in that brief moment when we realized the Garrador had pinpointed our location and was ready to strike." This listing and commentary could form the basis of a reception section on this character. Now for the plot section of the article on the character, the Bradygames Signature Series Guide devotes all of page 14 (three big paragraphs) specifically to this character and goes beyond just strategy type of information (noting for example the name's meaning ("man with claws"), i.e. we have two print reliable sources that provide out of universe commentary and importance. Next would be to see what kind of development information exists, but for a number of characters beyond Nemesis, we have some good sources out there. Something else to look at is “WTFiction!? Deciphering silly stories” by Jeremy Parish spread out across Electronic Gaming Monthly 221 (November 2007), Electronic Gaming Monthly 222 (December 2007), Electronic Gaming Monthly 223 (Holiday 2007), Electronic Gaming Monthly 224 (January 2008), and Electronic Gaming Monthly 225 (February 2008). Each of the installements devotes at least two full pages entirely to the items on the below list and includes (in the case of the above cited Resident Evil characters listings/commentaries on several characters, locations, weapons, etc.:

  • No. 5: Xenogears
  • No. 4: Mega Man
  • No. 3: Final Fantasy VII
  • No. 2: Resident Evil
  • No. 1: Metal Gear

Anyway, I think the above are some priority articles and I am inspired after they said in a review of The Darkside Chronicles on X-Play something to the effect of needing to check Wikipedia for all the back story. Also, I received the collector's edition of Resident Evil 5 for Christmas (we give out some gifts early) and it has a DVD documentary bonus figures with all sorts of interviews on the characters, even the non-playable ones like Excella. Please note that I am working with another editor whom you seem friends with on this as well and I am confident he would welcome your help to. For our discussion, please see User_talk:A_Nobody#Resident_Evil. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 19:42, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

I'd only do another RE character article if I could get my hands on the Resident Evil Archives book scans again...I lost them after finishing Nemesis' article and haven't been able to find them since, and I don't feel like paying for them. The book's a wealth of knowledge on character development you won't find online so...yeah, it's kinda a necessity.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 22:07, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I am debating buying it myself from Amazon.com or ebay, or asking my grandmother to. It is too bad it goes for like 100 bones nowadays. I cannot believe I missed this one when it came out as was much cheaper. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 22:13, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Amazon might be the best alt, but like you said it's costly and the info's too strewn around it to really purchase just to cite material from. I know there are scans floating around, just a matter of finding them (trying to locate the SF20: Art of Street Fighter book online too for similar means)...--Kung Fu Man (talk) 22:49, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Google Books doesn't have any kind of preview of note unfortunately for the RE book. By the way, are you interested in Tekken related articles at all? I bought the Collector's Edition version of Tekken 6 for the PS3 which came with an "art book" that actually features a healthy amount of out of universe development information in addition to the many images. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 22:50, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Why don't we set up a donation thing to get stuff like this? Or get interested people in on splitting the cost? - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 06:17, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Some of Bradygames's books are available as PDF files for purchase. Too bad this one isn't. There is one scan at this wiki, and you can download the full scan of the 300+ page book at this location. Sincerely, --A NobodyMy talk 18:45, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
