Article evaluation
editThe Wikipedia page that I chose to examine focus on the hijab. After reading the page, I can confidently state that all of the information is relevant and that it also does a thorough job of explaining what the hijab is, why devout Muslim women wear it, and some of the criticisms against it. One of the topics that distracted me concerned the “Unofficial pressure against wearing hijab,” which was well-supported with numerous citations, but which did not give more than a superficial overview of this pressure. As for neutrality, I would say that the article is, as it presents a historic overview of the traditional Islamic headscarf, compares it to other garments that devote Muslim women often wear – the burqa and niqab, more specifically – and presents why some people criticize women who wear the garment and why some people support women who wear it. Although the article is pretty well-divided, with each division having roughly the same amount of information, there does seem to be a bigger focus on contemporary reasons for why women wear hijab rather than on traditional ones. As such, the article is skewed in this manner, providing the reader with some information, but not really enough to understand the historical basis of the hijab. Again, the information is well-cited, and the links at the bottom of the page work, but some of the links lead to sites that do not look particularly professional, as they are overly colorful and have advertisements on them. This leads me to believe that perhaps the information is biased, or that it is, at the very least, not scholarly in nature, calling into question some of the ideas and claims that it advances. The talk page places the article in the B-class, and much of the conversation deals with the addition of citations and whether the points made in the article are valid and can be universalized. Finally, although we have not talked much about the hijab, we have talked about Islam and a woman’s role in the religion, and so this article, rather than going against the our conversation, adds to it.
