Hello, I'm CFA. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Accra Shepp have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. C F A 💬 21:34, 18 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi!
Thank you for taking a look at my changes. I'm afraid I don't see what was promotional. You have added back information that is factually incorrect as well. I did not attend school at SVA (The School of Visual Art), but I do teach there. My undergraduate degree is from Princeton and my graduate degree is from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. The other information I added to my exhibitions was to focus on the solo exhibitions at the larger institutions as I thought people looking at my profile would find these more useful.
It seems I overstepped, but it is not all clear how. I look forward to hearing your reply.

Hi CFA,
I reviewed the link below and saw that it is not acceptable for people to edit their own Wikipedia pages. I had heard about that, but I didn't know it extended removing factually inaccurate information. I added no new sections and made sure the content reflected as closely as possible the content from the previous version of the page. I understand the need for avoiding conflicts of interest, however, as I have not changed the contents of the page I'm not sure how this becomes self-promotion. I did not create the stub. I have no idea who did that.
I have been having people publish the inaccurate information and was wondering why people thought I had studied at SVA. When I saw this, I decided to try my hand.
Sincerely,
Accra Shepp
Here are the reasons for my changes.
  1. I added my birth date to the info box. My age was listed as 61-62. I am 62 and my birthday is May 14, 1962.
  2. I added the url to my official web site (this can be removed if that is self-promotion).
  3. My father is indeed a saxophonist. However, this is an antiquated word and as he also plays the piano and sings and composes, I felt musician and composer more accurately reflected his profession.
  4. I added my high school to my early career/eductaion.
  5. I deleted SVA as the school where I studied.
  6. Under "Art Career" I changed no information. I rearranged the museums which own my work and provided citations and links where they had not existed previously. These citations and links were to the institutions listed in the section
  7. Under "Exhibitions" I added two other solo shows with descriptions of the shows including citations and links including two citations from the New York Times. I tried to use the best and most relevant sources.
  8. Under honors and awards, I added one award and two residencies previously not listed. These all have links and citations to prove their existence. These can be removed if necessary. The previous entry made reference to numerous awards, so I thought I could list a few more.

Hi @Accrashepp, I'm not CFA, but I had the article bookmarked so saw that you tried to update it. WP strongly discourages autobiographical editing, because it's really hard for someone to be totally neutral about themself. On occasion I help out good faith editors with a conflict of interest, and it is clear that you are here in good faith, otherwise you would not have responded the way you have.
If you place your edit requests on the article talk page either I or another editor will review the proposed changes or additions and either fulfill the requested changes or not. You can use the Edit Request Wizard for COI editor to make your requests. Here is the link Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard/COI. If you have trouble using the Wizard, you can ask for help at the Wikipedia Tea House located here: WP:TEAHOUSE. Remember, we are volunteer, unpaid-editors here, so sometimes it can take a while for edit requests to be answered. Best regards, Netherzone (talk) 17:08, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
P.S. make sure when you submit an edit request to add an independent reliable source to verify the content (like something in a newspaper, magazine or book) that backs up the content you wish to add. Include a link if possible because can expedite the process. Netherzone (talk) 17:10, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh my gosh! That is so helpful!!! Thank you :)
I will get to it right away. Have a good week and thanks again! Accrashepp (talk) 19:22, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
No rush, there are no deadlines here! Just make sure to "ping" me so I know to look at the article talk page for an edit request. Please keep any edit requests short ('cause we're all volunteers here)! Here's how you create a "ping" notification: Help:Notifications.
You can also upload an image of yourself to Wikipedia Commons using the upload Wizard and I will create an infobox for your article using that photo of you. (You may have to create an account on Commons because it's a separate, but related, entity than Wikipedia. Here is a link to the upload Wizard: [1] Again, ping me on the article talk page (not the image page) if you decide you'd like a photo of yourself, however if someone else took the photo you would need to get their permission, and make sure to chose the right license. If you have a self-portrait, that might be the easiest solution. Netherzone (talk) 20:14, 19 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Got it. I will do as you suggest.
All best,

Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, Accrashepp. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Accra Shepp, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. C F A 💬 21:34, 18 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
